Last night Mt. Carmel took their undefeated record into a matchup with Mount St. Joseph. The Cougars came up short on their home floor by a final score of 78-67 and fall to 8-1 with the loss. The Gaels improve to 7-1 in the win. We’ll take a look at the ten best players from last night’s contest.

.) 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="954213" first="D’Angelo" last="Stines"] was brilliant on both of ends of the floor throughout last night’s game. The Old Dominion commit led all scorers with 34 points as his scoring versatility was on full display. Stines had a number of acrobatic finishes around the rim, hit pull up transition three’s off the dribble and routinely created open shots for himself in the mid-range. Defensively he was on a mission to contain Toby Nnadozie and was successful in doing so limiting him to just 10 points. Stines got his hands on multiple passes after working hard to deny Nnadozie on Iverson cuts that generated transition opportunities for his team.

.) 2022 [player_tooltip player_id="904628" first="Deon" last="Perry"] led the Cougars with 29 points and put on a shooting clinic from beyond the arc by knocking down seven triples. He was a technician in ball screen scenarios who made the defense pay for any blip of day light with quick trigger pull-ups. He had tremendous pace and balance in transition stopping on a dime and sinking three’s to keep Mt. Carmel within reach. Defensively he was pesky on the ball and collected multiple steals off his pressure.

.) 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="1127305" first="Bryson" last="Tucker"] impressed once again with his steady and efficient scoring. The 6-foot-4 freshman doesn’t allow others to speed him up. There were stints during this game where he was matched up against a small guard and he immediately posted up, took his time and used textbook footwork to get shots at the rim. I had the chance to see him take the ball coast-to-coast against pressure and liked the confidence he had with his ball handling. Tucker chipped in with 16 points.

.) 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="902023" first="Ausar" last="Crawley"] had his hands full on the defensive end trying to guard Perry. While Perry got the better of him, Crawley remained calm and collected as always, showing his poise late in the game by stepping to the free-throw line to ice any chance of a Mt. Carmel surge. Crawley tied Tucker for 16 points on the night.

.) 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="837931" first="Kevin" last="Kalu"] didn’t have his usual scoring of performance that we’ve been used to seeing, but he was still a dominant presence on the glass as indicated by his 20 rebounds. He kept his double-double streak alive finishing with 10 points. Kalu made effective moves with his back to the basket, but it was just one of those nights where his over the should hooks weren’t falling.

.) 2021 [player_tooltip player_id="902051" first="Sean" last="Carr"] played limited minutes last night, but still made an impact on both ends. Defensively he did a great job of cheating Kalu on his post touches and not allowing him position or clean looks at the rim. On the offensive end Carr picked his spots widely and did so often enough to keep a balance through the Gaels’ attack. His most memorable bucket came after a catch at the high post where he got Kalu in the air with a pump fake, used one dribble to get to the rim and finished with a two-handed slam.

.) 2023 Mitchell Kalu provided key energy and production off the bench for the Cougars. The 6-foot-4 forward has a hard hat mentality when it comes to crashing the glass at both ends. On multiple occasions he would wrestle the ball out of a Mt. St. Joe player’s hands after they had thought they had secured the rebound. He finished around the rim and embraced contact on his way up. Kalu also had a strong two-handed funk off of a dump off pass that helped ignite some energy into his team.

.) 2022 Toby Nnadozie had his share of struggles as mentioned earlier but started getting into a groove late as the Cougars made one last push to get back into striking distance with less than two minutes. The 6-foot-3 guard finished with 10 points, seven of which came in the final frame. Despite Stines finishing with 34, Nnadozie did a nice job in spurts of pressuring him and forcing the ball out of his hands. As usual he was active off the ball defensively and it resulted in a few steals that led to fastbreak points.

.) 2024 [player_tooltip player_id="1127307" first="Andrew" last="Dixon"] chipped in with 10 points for Mt. Carmel, all coming in the final two quarters of play. Dixon capitalized on two big three’s in the fourth quarter as part of Mt. Carmel’s comeback and looked confident on his drives to the rim earlier in the second half.

.) 2023 Julien Motoume was matched up against Mitchell Kalu and it was a battle to say the least. Both players are 6-foot-4 and built like grown men. They know how to throw their weight around and be an impact on the glass and corralling 50/50s. He converted a three in the first half. Although Motoume doesn’t get a ton of shots at this point within the offense, he’s a capable shot maker from beyond the arc.
