The 2021 New Jersey basketball season has been different than usual with multiple interruptions throughout the first two weeks. Teams are trying to do the best they can to get as many games in as possible, creating several intriguing match-ups. That is the case for this weekend as it is filled with good battles in the backcourt. Here are the top guard match-ups to watch out for this weekend.

Bergen Catholic vs. Gill St. Bernard’s: [player_tooltip player_id="850662" first="Will" last="Richardson"] vs. [player_tooltip player_id="850666" first="Denver" last="Anglin"]

This is a heavyweight fight between two of the top guards in the 2022 class. Richardson leads the charge for the Crusaders and is looking to finish on the All-State team for the second straight year. Anglin is a big-time shooter and is coming off a 27-point, 7-assist performance in the season opener against Hunterdon Central. Both guards are capable of scoring points in bunches and are good leaders on the floor. Top 10 match-ups in the Garden State are always worth the hype and this guard battle should be entertaining to watch.

Montclair Immaculate vs. St. Peter’s Prep: [player_tooltip player_id="1036729" first="Zakai" last="Zeigler"] vs. [player_tooltip player_id="850664" first="Mark" last="Armstrong"]

Another top 10 match-up on the weekend slate, this game features two guard battles as [player_tooltip player_id="850513" first="Jayden" last="Brown"] and [player_tooltip player_id="900328" first="Rayshawn" last="Ford"] will also be going head-to-head. Zeigler has been the engine for the Lions this season as he has scored 20 points in all three games this season while also getting six assists in two of them. Armstrong is a scoring point guard who is at his best attacking the basket, but can also cause damage from the perimeter. Zeigler’s quickness should test Armstrong, but his height advantage could nullify it. This game will be fun to watch with four guards on the floor capable of going off for 20 points on any given night.

Roselle Catholic vs. Elizabeth: [player_tooltip player_id="787669" first="Corey" last="Floyd Jr"]. vs. [player_tooltip player_id="900321" first="Al-Fatir" last="Connor"]

This UCC battle has been hotly contested over the last two seasons and it should be no different this year. Floyd Jr. is playing like a First-Team All-State selection as the UConn commit is averaging 25.7 points per game in his last three games. [player_tooltip player_id="900321" first="Al-Fatir" last="Connor"] is a dynamic floor general who uses his speed and good handle to get into the lane to make plays. Both guards have good chemistry with their backcourt companions as [player_tooltip player_id="850752" first="Simeon" last="Wilcher"] has been dropping dimes all season, while [player_tooltip player_id="1016639" first="Evan" last="Perez"] works well off Connor. Both guards are effective in different ways, making the game enticing to watch from start to finish.

Watchung Hills vs. Hunterdon Central: [player_tooltip player_id="929528" first="Trevor" last="Bokach"] vs. [player_tooltip player_id="900306" first="Brian" last="Johannsson"]

This Skyland, Delaware Division battle is intriguing with a pair of guards who impact the game in multiple ways. Bokach plays with great floor vision and his head is always up in the half court. Johannsson has a silky smooth release, but the Johns Hopkins commit can also put the ball on the floor and get to the basket. Both players are solid defenders as they play with great instincts and their hands on numerous deflections. Both teams are looking for their first win in division play, which should create a great game atmosphere.

Wildwood Catholic vs. Ocean City: [player_tooltip player_id="927391" first="Martin" last="Anguelov"] vs. [player_tooltip player_id="1012962" first="Gannon" last="Brady"]

If you like players who are capable of putting up points in bunches, than this Cape-Atlantic League match-up is the game for you. Anguelov has a clean shooting stroke and can get from deep in a hurry if he gets into an early rhythm. Brady is a scoring machine for Ocean City as the Fordham baseball commit has eclipsed 30 points in both games this season. both players are more than just scorers as Anguelov is a good passer, while Brady is unafraid to go after rebounds against much bigger opponents. Both teams are looking to carry momentum into next week, which makes the individual match-up between Anguelov and Brady more fun to watch.
