In starting our first class of 2023 list, we realized we forgot a couple of key names that will be added moving forward as we update the rankings. Here’s a look at 8 players we forgot in our first 2023 rankings.
Leland Coleman | 6’5” WF | Trinity Episcopal
How I forgot to rank Coleman is beyond me, as the 6’5” wing showed great potential throughout the fall and the winter and will likely be a breakout guy if and when his Trinity team can get back on the court. The brother of Duke freshman Henry, they’re different players and while Leland doesn’t have the same size and strength he has similar length and is an above average athlete as well. He’s still figuring it out but he’s shown improvement as a perimeter scorer and shooter, he can guard multiple positions and he’s chock full of potential moving forward.
Myles Derricott | 6’2” SG | Patrick Henry (Ashland)
Derricott is a name I came across at an event this fall and when I asked around about him people seemed to be a little surprised I didn’t know who he was. An off guard with a good frame and natural ability on the court, he’s a good athlete who is a skilled shot maker that makes things look very easy on the floor. He’s a knock down shooter from deep, he can create in isolation situations off the bounce and he is a guy whose name could ring out in the Richmond area after a few more years.
Brett Dent | 6’8” C | LC Bird
Bird has one of the most talented groups of 2022 players in the state, but they have a couple of sophomores as well that will be intriguing moving forward. Dent is a guy who has made huge strides since playing JV as a freshman, and if he continues to develop he’ll be very intriguing moving forward. He runs the floor hard and does the dirty work in the paint, he hits the glass on both ends and he always seems to be in the right place at the right time.
Logan Hoit | 6’7” C | Meadowbrook
Another guy I randomly came across at an event this past fall, Hoit played JV as a freshman at Meadowbrook before hitting a growth spurt and now looks like he could develop into a very intriguing prospect. He has good hands and decent feet in the post, he has good touch out to 15 feet and shows good mobility that will only get better as he continues to grow into his body.
Xavier Butler Xavier Butler 6'3" | SF East Rockingham | 2023 State VA | 6’3” F | East Rockingham
Butler played sparingly for East Rock as a freshman and now is a starter on a team that is likely one of the top teams in Class 2 this year. He’s a glue guy with potential to be more moving forward, as he’s a good athlete and has a nice frame that should fill out, he defends with good intensity and he’s a good rebounder at his position as well.
Bennett Bowers | 5’11” PG | Buffalo Gap
Bowers doesn’t play at a big school or in a big market, but the highly skilled point guard already has a good resume and is going to score a lot of points in his career at Buffalo Gap. He’s a shifty guard with a tight handle that can break down defenders easily, he is a confident scorer that can make tough shots from all three levels and he’s capable of making guys on his team better as well.
Justin Bass | 5’10” CG | Kecoughtan
Bass is a young guy on a talented and experienced Kecoughtan team that will be a breakout guy in the 757 moving forward. He had a great showing in the first session of the CBG Winter Series, where he showed the ability to play on or off the basketball, make shots from deep at a high clip and he’s a good defender that flies all around the court to make plays.
Martin Perdue | 6’4” SF | Broad Run
Perdue is a big time shooter out of the Loudoun County area that played big minutes as a freshman at Broad Run, and he shows good potential moving forward as he continues to develop. He has a great frame that’s very strong already, he understands spacing and works well to get open and he really shoots it well from deep when left open.
