The Mr. Basketball award is generally considered the highest individual honor given in Michigan high school basketball. Since 1981, 18 of the winners of this award have gone on to be drafted in the NBA. It has been won by legends such as Chris Webber, Terry Mills, Cassius Winston, Glen Rice, and Sam Vincent. Last year, Benton Harbor's Scooby Johnson claimed the honor. Given the difficulties involved with this season, the Mr. Basketball award may be even more difficult than normal to determine. We have been introducing some of the candidates for the award this season.

Read about these candidates below:

[player_tooltip player_id="811109" first="Keyon" last="Menifield"] needs to be taken seriously as a candidate for the Michigan Mr. Basketball award this season. He's an elite point guard at state powerhouse program, Flint Beecher. Prep Hoops Michigan has him ranked as the number 10 senior prospect in the state. Menifield has been a fast and steady rise up those rankings since the spring. He is currently uncommitted, but is certainly the type of player that should have a laundry list of options at any level.

Menifield has played Robin to [player_tooltip player_id="784993" first="Jalen" last="Terry"]'s Batman. Now, Terry is at Oregon, and Menifield is more than ready to carry the torch. In fact, don't be surprised if he turns into his own superhero.

Menifield is lightning in a bottle as a basketball player. He's a menace in the open floor, especially if he's leading the break. He keeps his head on a swivel allowing him to finish or dish in transition. Menifield has excellent handles with both hands which helps him maintain a level of comfort no matter where he is on the floor. He's a threat to score from anywhere and all levels. Just as easy as he buries a triple from 3 feet behind the arc - he drives to the bucket and finishes above the rim. Menifield is also an unselfish distributor. Trust me, he could go for 25 plus a night, and he will if he needs to. But he will also pass up a good shot for a teammate that has a great one.

[player_tooltip player_id="811109" first="Keyon" last="Menifield"] needs to be considered as a preseason candidate for the 2021 Michigan Mr. Basketball. He's too dynamic, explosive, and effective to not be. Menifield as Mr. Basketball would be a great story of hard work, patience, and grinding for success.
