The event featured teams from the 757, 804, 703, 434 and 540 area codes, and was chock full of talent for all levels. The games were competitive, well coached and gave the kids a much needed opportunity to get seen in an unprecedented time.
Here’s a look at part one of the 2021 standouts, featuring 7 guys who had big days on Saturday.
Bryson Spell Bryson Spell 6'7" | PF Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’8” PF | CBG Neptunes
Spell showed exactly why many consider him the best available prospect in the 757 and one of the best in VA, and it’s not just because of his size. Spell has that unique skill set that many are looking for in a big man now, as he can play inside-out and stretch the floor, he communicates well on the defensive end and his improvement in his body and confidence bolds well for him moving forward. He produced at a high rate, was efficient and showed good leadership as well.
Christian Moore Christian Moore 6'1" | CG Cape Henry | 2021 State VA | 6’1” PG | CBG Neptunes
A teammate of Spell’s who also showed he’s one of the best available in the 757, it baffles me that Moore doesn’t have a ton of Patriot and Ivy League schools recruiting him, among others. He’s a guy who’s a walking bucket at the point guard position, someone who can fill it up from multiple levels off the bounce and then hurt the defense with his playmaking ability after they hone in on him. He has deep range, plays with good pace and is an underrated athlete, and he brings it against top competition regularly.
Zach Rosenthal Zach Rosenthal 6'0" | SG Steward School | 2021 State VA | 6’0” WG | VA Havoc
The recent Roanoke commit showed why he was one of the most sought after D3 prospects in the state after a good session two with Rockett and he switched to a new team in VA Havoc, but had similar results with his play. The 6’0” guard knows his role and doesn’t try to deviate from that or do too much, as he makes shots at a high clip from deep, makes hustle plays and shows he can be a secondary ball handler. The lefty was lights out from deep on the day, and his gritty style on both ends makes him easy to like moving forward.
Dana Woodley Dana Woodley 6'4" | SG John Marshall | 2021 State VA | 6’4” WG | CBG Blue Magic
Woodley has been one of the breakout guys at the CBG Fall Series, and it’s not like we didn’t know him before but he’s put doubts as to what level he should be at the next level as he’s stepped up and took a much bigger role on a talented Blue Magic team. The 6’4” guard should be getting recruited by many more high D2 and low major D1 schools, as he has the size and athleticism that translates well and he’s a guy who can make shots when he’s open. He made multiple high energy and freakishly athletic plays above the rim that others simply can’t, he came up big down the stretch in close games and he has major upside on the defensive end.
Jason Nelson Jason Nelson 5'8" | PG John Marshall | 2021 State VA | 5’9” PG | CBG Blue Magic
The U of R commit is a kid I probably have wrote about more than anyone else in the class, and that’s because he’s so steady and consistent as a floor general and he sets the tone every game on both ends of the floor. Nelson isn’t the biggest or most athletic guy, but he plays the game at his own pace, he gets where he wants to on the floor and he’s equally successful as a scorer and a playmaker off the bounce. The more I watch him the more I believe he’s also underrated on the defensive end, where he shows his unbelievable competitive nature and never shies away from a big time matchup.
Geremy Robinson | 6’2” CG | Team Assist 2.0
A new name to the Virginia scene, Robinson came to the 757 this summer from Hawaii and showed in session 3 that he’ll be a breakout guy in that area this year. A strong and dynamic guard off the bounce, Robinson can get to his spots and score it from multiple levels, and he plays with a competitive chip and high motor that you love to see. He’s a guy who can play on or off the basketball, brings it on both ends and will surprise a lot of people in that area when they have to match up with Oscar Smith, his new team.
Garrett Cox Garrett Cox 6'6" | SG Glen Allen | 2021 State VA | 6’5” WF | Team Assist 2.0
Cox is a guy who sometimes gets overshadowed at an event like this because he’s an unselfish guy that plays the right way, but to the eyes of people who know the game they see his value and his potential moving forward. He’s a big wing that’s highly skilled in a number of ways, as he can make shots off the catch from deep, attack and use his size to finish at the basket and he makes the right play and is unselfish offensively. He’s one of the biggest sleepers in the Richmond area and has a ton of small schools salivating over him.
