With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards in Region 6
Warren Walker, Rugby
Walker emerged a rock-solid rotation player last year for Rugby, averaging nine points and nearly four assists per game, helping the Panthers win the Region 6 championship a year ago. Walker is a true floor general who did a great job running the show, distributing to an array of talented scorers last year and knocking down open shots. He’ll have more on his plate as a senior, both as a scorer and as a playmaker.
Zach Hendrickson Zach Hendrickson 6'0" | PG Our Redeemer's | 2022 State ND , Our Redeemer’s
Hendrickson’s been one of the best guards in the region each of the last two years, helping lead the Knights to two straight region championship games. He’s got all-state potential as an upperclassman and on a team that should be the favorite to win the region, he’s a legitimate go-to guy. He’s a dynamic perimeter shooter who can heat up in a hurry, but he’s also got the burst to create his own shot at the end of a shot clock.
Lucas Undlin Lucas Undlin 6'1" | SG Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood | 2021 State ND , Mohall-Lansford-Sherwood
MLS has been solid the last few years and Undlin has been a key component since his freshman season. He’s an excellent athlete and can create his shot against just about anybody, plus defend at a high level. He’s got All-Region potential.
Payton Martin Payton Martin 6'2" | PG Drake-Anamoose | 2021 State ND , Drake-Anamoose
Drake-Anamoose won 18 games a year ago and looks like a potential contender in Region 6 this winter and Martin being one of the best guards in the region is a big part of that equation. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 15 points, four rebounds and four assists. He’s got good length which helps him on the defensive end of the floor. He can score in a variety of ways and is efficient from all over the floor.
William Sanders, Our Redeemer’s
Sanders developed into a rock-solid lead guard for the Knights last season, getting it done on both ends of the floor. He’s got all-region potential as a senior, as he’s one of the best on-ball defenders in the region and sets the tone for an Our Redeemer’s team that should expect to contend for a region title.
Logan Merck, Bishop Ryan
Merck emerged as a consistent point-producer for Bishop Ryan last season, showcasing the burst and explosiveness to play through contact on drives while also threatening defenses from well beyond the 3-point line. He’ll be heavily featured in the Lions’ offense next year and could put up massive scoring numbers for a team that generally plays in nip-and-tuck affairs.
Jersey Selzler, Velva
Velva returns just about everybody from a team that won 15 games a season ago and while the strength of the Aggies is one the interior, Selzler is a critical perimeter component. He’s a steadying hand with the ball and a capable playmaker. And when his number is called, he’s shown he can provide complementary scoring.
Walker Wold Walker Wold 6'3" | SF Lewis & Clark - Berthold | 2021 State ND , Lewis & Clark – Berthold
Wold was a catalyst for Berthold during the winter season, providing a bright spot for a team that won 13 games and averaged just 52 points per game. He’s got excellent size on the perimeter and can use his strength to get to areas on the floor where he can make a big impact.
