Point guard play is essential in basketball as they control the flow of the game. The 2021 class is filled with strong point guards with Blair Academy’s [player_tooltip player_id="850502" first="Jaylen" last="Blakes"] leading the way. The newly ranked point guards are skilled players who should make an impact at the next level. Here are the top newly ranked floor generals in the 2021 rankings.

[player_tooltip player_id="1012948" first="Isaiah" last="Thompson"], 6’0 Peddie

Thompson led the Falcons’ attack last season and should do the same this season. The Lafayette commit is lightning quick in the open floor and excels in transition. Thompson has a good handle and knows how to finish around the basket. He has a nice release on his jumper and shoots the ball with confidence. Thompson’s ability to score the ball at all three levels should lead him to a strong senior season for Peddie.

[player_tooltip player_id="1012992" first="Lorenzo" last="Washington"], 5’10 Patrick School

The Celtics need to replace East Carolina signee [player_tooltip player_id="828326" first="Noah" last="Farrakhan"] and Washington looks to help junior [player_tooltip player_id="901943" first="Dionte" last="Johnson"] run the show. The 5’10 guard is electric with the ball in his hands and is a blur in the open floor. Washington is a good passer and is also capable of beating his man off the dribble. He is a good on-ball defender as he has quick hands and moves his feet well. Washington played for the Patrick School earlier in his high school career and should have a good return to the Garden State in 2020-21.

[player_tooltip player_id="836479" first="Guy" last="Fauntleroy"], 6’0 Olympus Prep

Fauntleroy transferred into New Jersey from Maryland and should make an immediate impact for Olympus Prep. The 6’0 guard knows how to beat his man in the halfcourt and can finish around the basket. Fauntleroy has a good handle and rarely gets flustered when pressured. He is more than just a driver as he can also knock down shots from the perimeter. Fauntleroy is a talented point guard prospect who should lead the Olympus Prep team this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="880973" first="Colin" last="Schaefer"], 6’0 Olympus Prep

Another Olympus Prep product, Schaefer is looking to have a big season for the postgrad team. The 6’0 guard has a good release on his jumper and is capable of drilling shot from behind the arc. Schaefer is more than just a shooter as he has a good handle and can finish around the rim. He is an underrated defender and rarely makes poor decisions with the ball in his hands. Schaefer’s ability to shoot the basketball should help the Olympus Prep postgrad team this season.

[player_tooltip player_id="1016639" first="Evan" last="Perez"], 5’10 Elizabeth

The Minutemen lost First Team All-Group guard [player_tooltip player_id="850354" first="D.J." last="Watkins"] to graduation and Perez looks ready to pick up the slack. The 5’10 guard is a pesky on-ball defender as he can pick up point guards full court. Perez uses his quickness to blow by his defenders in the half court and is capable of finishing around the basket. He is more than just a driver as he can make opponents pay when they give him space on the perimeter. Perez and [player_tooltip player_id="900321" first="Al-Fatir" last="Connor"] are a solid point guard duo who should run the show for Elizabeth this season.
