With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the top guards in Region 5
Luke Wanzeck, Shiloh Christian
Shiloh Christian is losing a big chunk of its core from a year ago, which means there’s going to be a lot of shots and opportunity for guys to step up. Wanzeck started last year and was a key rotation guy who showed he can score in complementary fashion while providing top-notch perimeter defense. He’ll have more on his plate on the offensive end as a senior.
Gunner Jacobs Gunner Jacobs 6'2" | SG Underwood | 2021 State ND , Underwood
Underwood was one of the best teams in Region 5 last year but graduated a great senior class. One of the key remnants from last year’s team is Jacobs, a 6-foot-2 swingman who can score and defend at a high level. He’s a good long-range shooter who can create his own shot a little bit off the bounce. Expect him to be heavily featured this winter.
Tucker Schiele, Wilton-Wing
Schiele emerged as a solid two-way play last year for a subpar Wilton-Wing team. He scored it at a solid level, providing some off-the-dribble shot-making and he’ll have to do more of that as a senior. But his big impact comes on the defensive end of the floor where he’s an excellent man defender who makes life difficult for his counterpart while also excelling as a help man.
Xander Vetter, Standing Rock/Selfridge
Vetter is a diminutive, explosive point guard who can control a game on the offensive end of the floor. He’s a heat-check shooter from deep and can dominate a game for stretches at a time because of his ability to not only shoot from the perimeter but also break down defenders and make plays for his teammates.
Connor Kerzmann, Garrison
Garrison has a chance to contend in the region this upcoming winter and a critical component of that potential is Kerzmann continuing to develop into an upper-echelon guard. The 6-foot-1 sophomore emerged as a deadly shooter last year and gives a Garrison team that plays deliberate on the offensive end some much-needed juice.
