Francisco’s Finest: Pangos Best of SoCal Summer Showcase (Class of 2021/Standouts) LONG BEACH, CA—I felt the next time I’d be in a gym would be a surreal-like feeling—and that is exactly the case. Dinos Trigonis, who had been running events in Arizona, Utah, and Iowa—unveiled his first event in So-Cal—and it was quite good to say the least.The playmaking abilities of sleeper Keshawn Hall as well as the improved all around play of Jalen Pietre were notable evaluations. Toss in the lights out shooting of [player_tooltip player_id="747084" first="Scotty" last="Washington"] and it’s safe to say the talent in the Class of 2021 tilt was deep and talented. He isn’t “wowing” crowds with breathtaking athletic plays, but he is a stat stuffer in the areas of rebounding, savvy assists, and ambidextrous finishes. He’s a blue-collar stretch 4-man who can knock in 3s, rebound in and out of his area, fill the lane in transition, and deliver the nifty assist in the half court set. Yep, that about sums it up. Jalen Pietre (Long Beach Poly) 2021, WF, 6-foot-8, 200 pounds Joel’s Take: Pietre is apparently looking at the idea of reclassifying to the 2022 class, but the way his game has elevated in the past year, he may think otherwise. The rangy lefty is a multi-skilled wing who has some point forward skills. He can handle it well in transition, snaps passes to open teammates, and his explosiveness has increased exponentially. He can knock in the 3-point shot and his face-up skills are on the come—not too mention his defensive potential with his length and anticipation. [player_tooltip player_id="680216" first="Brenton" last="Knapper"] (Ontario/Colony) 2021, PG, 6-foot, 160 pounds Joel’s Take: Knapper is undersized, but he’s explosive as they come at that position. The Santa Clara commit has a quick first step, can score with the floater, or pull-up and convert the 3-point pull-up. His head is always up in transition and rarely overly handles it. He can break down defenders with his crossover and he’s quite potent in a pick and roll set. [player_tooltip player_id="680214" first="Corey" last="Cofield II"] (Birmingham) 2021, 6-foot-4, 175 pounds Joel’s Take: Cofield is one of the better sleeper types in SoCal. The athleticism and motor have always been part of the equation, but now the skills are evolving as well. He has the prototypcial frame with long arms and is explosive in transition. His first step is explolsive and he can finish with either hand. Overall though, the improved jump shot, ball skills, and decision making have been noted. [player_tooltip player_id="951215" first="Darvelle" last="Wyatt"] (Etiwanda) 2021, PF, 6-foot-5, 260 pounds Joel’s Take: When you first look at Wyatt, you think—offensive tackle. However, when you watch him play basketball it’s impressive how well he moves and the skill level. He has quick feet and has a nose for the ball at both ends. Not too mention he knocked in a few 3-pointers as well. Look for him to have a very productive year for Dave Kleckner’s squad this season.
