Continue ReadingFall sports are right around the corner. With a few more grassroots tournaments still in store for summer, hoops aren’t completely over yet. But with the AAU season being salvaged to a degree, there’s a clearer picture of what to expect next season.
Here are some of the guards to watch at the Class B level:
Stevan Garza Stevan Garza 6'2" | SG Grafton | 2021 State ND , Grafton
Garza was a breakout player last year, becoming a go-to guy for a Grafton team that exceeded expectations. The 6-foot-2 senior averaged 19 points, seven rebounds and four assists while running the show. He’s a strong 3-point shooter, smooth off the dribble, solid finishing inside and a heady playmaker. Grafton may be the favorite in Region 2 and Garza has all-state potential.
Garret Meehl Garret Meehl 5'11" | PG Oakes | 2021 State ND , Oakes
Meehl forms one half of a deadly duo that should have Oakes in contention in Region 3 this winter. The 5-foot-11 point guard stuffed the stat sheet as a junior, averaging 17 points, six rebounds and five assists while shooting 34 percent from the 3-point line. He gets to the free throw line at a high rate, makes plays and sets the tone for the team’s defense.
Jake Daniel, Dickinson Trinity
Daniel emerged as a consistent scorer last year, helping the Titans reach another Region 7 title game. On a team that won with defense and balance, Daniel represented a player who could bend the game in spurts. Now, he’ll have the reigns to run the show on a team that will need him to consistently deliver point production. He’s a solid long-range shooter with the quickness to get to the paint and make plays. And he’ll bring it on the defensive end of the floor too.
Noah Fredrickson Noah Fredrickson 6'0" | SG Powers Lake | 2021 State ND , Powers Lake
Fredrickson is the engine for a Ranchers team that should be among the contenders in Region 8 for a third year in a row. His scoring took a dip as a junior, but his ability to control the game and make plays for his teammates makes him one of the most valuable players in the region. He’ll have the ball in his hands a ton – so don’t be surprised if he’s delivering 15-20 points, 4-6 rebounds and 4-6 assists on a nightly basis.
Zach Hendrickson, Our Redeemer’s
Hendrickson has been productive each of the last two years and should be one of the most dynamic guards in Class B now as an upperclassman. He’s a deadly long-range shooter with the size and athleticism to get to the paint and score in traffic. Our Redeemer’s has reached the Region 6 championship game each of the last two years and may be the favorite to win it this winter.
