Going into this off-season, one of the goals for [player_tooltip player_id='2026486' first='Keone' last='Gates'] was to prove he was a Division I recruit. Consider the mission accomplished. Holding multiple D-I offers and sorting out his recruitment this fall, the explosive Parkrose senior guard credits the opportunity to showcase himself and the development in his game helped him get to where he is and where he wants to be.

"I feel like the summer was a really good experience, definitely a jump from not having looks to my senior year of being able to have opportunities and looks from a couple college coaches," Gates said. "Definitely it was a great experience and definitely a mind changer for sure going into this fall and into my senior year, just knowing that it's really time to take it in, be serious about it because after this year it's time to go. So definitely being able to be blessed to get those scholarships and those offers was definitely great for my summer."

From a development and skills perspective, Gates was also happy with how things went. "I feel like my pace, I feel like my pace gotten way better, knowing when to slow down and when to speed up," Gates said. "Just really to be honest, controlling the game and putting the game in my hands was one thing I feel like I worked on. Also just becoming a more vocal leader on the court and to be honest off the court, just talking more and getting my guys engaged making sure nobody's out and lollygagging and the whole team's locked in and ready to play."

The results - multiple scholarship offers from the likes of Northern Arizona, South Dakota, and San Jose State. He's enjoyed getting to know the coaching staffs and learning about each program and is about to embark on some official visits, first to Northern Arizona and then to South Dakota the weekend after. When he's done he's hoping to make a decision in the early signing period and it will be the one that gives him the best opportunity.

"To be honest, it's which school is going to be able to let me play my freshman year to be honest off the bat," Gates said. "Not even starting, just playing, getting playing time to begin with. I want to be that freshman that gets in, gets a couple of minutes, hopefully looking to get 12, 11 (scoring) average. Eventually go where I really want to go in college, my sophomore and junior year for sure."

As he weighs his options, Gates is also focused on the upcoming season with Parkrose - one in which the Broncos are looking to defend their 5A title with Gates now a center piece in the effort. "Right now for my senior year expectations are to win state and get player of the year, win Les Schwab," Gates said. "To be honest, I'm here for it all - I'm out for everything. Any tournament we're in, I'm aiming for it all and I don't want nothing less."
