Introducing Mr. Basketball Candidate 14: Peter Wedewer

As part of our preseason preview content, we're counting down the top 15 candidates for this year's Mr. Basketball award, presented annually to the top senior in the state. Our countdown continues with our No. 14 player, Wahlert Catholic point guard [player_tooltip player_id='2370429' first='Peter' last='Wedewer'].

Name: [player_tooltip player_id='2370429' first='Peter' last='Wedewer']
Height: 5-11
Position: PG
School: Wahlert Catholic

2025-26 stats: 320 points (14.5/game), 75 rebounds (3.4), 92 assists (4.2), 23 steals (1.0), 105-238 FG (44.1%), 60-138 3P (43.5%), 50-65 FT (76.9%)
Career stats: 353 points (12.6), 82 rebounds (2.9), 97 assists (3.5), 28 steals (1.0), 114-258 FG (44.2%), 67-152 3P (44.1%), 58-74 FT (78.4%)

About Wedewer: Wedewer is a small but fiery lead guard who is among the best two-way guards in the state, regardless of class. He's a tenacious competitor who takes real pride in his work as an on-ball defender and playmaker, and he's also a really talented three-level scorer and shooting threat. He oozes confidence, wants the ball in big moments, and is the type of scrappy guard who is going to do whatever he can to help his team win.

Why he can win Mr. Basketball: A late-season call-up to the varsity roster during his sophomore year, appearing in just six games, Wedewer will have the "worst" career stats of any player on this countdown. But as he showed as a junior, he's a highly impactful player who can be the best player on a very successful team. We're projecting Wahlert to be one of the best teams in Class 3A this winter, and if he's able to lead the Golden Eagles to the state tournament, and potentially on a deep run in Ames, he could be a player whose name is at the very least mentioned during the voting.
