2026-27 Team Preview: Mayfield Trojans

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>2026-27 MAYFIELD TROJANS PREVIEW</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>OVERVIEW</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Mayfield went 16-12 last season and reached the Class 5A state tournament for the first time in more than a decade. The fact the Trojans lost a hard-fought battle to Rio Rancho in the first round did little to diminish the positive feelings about the season.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Even though Mayfield lost eight seniors to graduation, the Trojans return three of their top five scorers as they strive to take the next step for the program, which is win a state tournament game. The rotation for this coming season will likely include four seniors and four sophomores.</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>“This season, we have guys that have had a taste of March,” third-year Mayfield head coach Ben Trujillo told Prep Hoops New Mexico. “Now we want to do more. They've been working hard. We graduated eight seniors, but I feel we're going to be more experienced this season. We're going to be quick and athletic. Will likely play point guard. Able to beat defenders off the dribble. “He knows he has to get everybody involved,” Trujillo said. “Last season he wanted to go to the rim. I like where we're at right now with Homer. He can get the ball from one end of the court to another very quickly. Role will significantly expand this season. Good shooter. High basketball IQ. Usually in the rights pot to make plays. Jordan will be a very good role player, just like all of our young players. He's very athletic. He can shoot, but he also rebounds and passes well. He's learning it. And if you leave him open, he can knock down shots.” &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;</p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p><strong>FINAL THOUGHTS</strong></p> <!-- /wp:paragraph --> <!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>Mayfield open the 2026-27 season with cross-border road contests at El Paso (TX) High and El Paso (TX) Del Valle. After that, they host Volcano Vista and Albuquerque High in early December.
