The amount of freshman talent was off the charts at The Champion Center on Saturday. Playing with a very high motor, Vazquez competed, on both sides of the ball; aggressive, physical and is the type of player that will earn varsity time due to his effort.

Burks Jr showed out as a true multi-faceted point guard at The Freshman Showcase. Playing with the ball "on a string", the 5-10 Burks was able to beat his defender, repeatedly getting into the paint hitting cutting teammates or finishing over and around traffic often with a pretty floater.

On a team with willing shooters, Goodwin-Wilson seemed content to do the little things for his team. Focusing on the controllables: hustle, defense, setting screens, and competing on the glass, Goodwin-Wilson showed traits that coaches at the varsity level will love to see.

Cleveland, a 5-8 Algoma product was another member of Team 10 that had to find his way to affect the game without seeing the ball much. Competing on the boards, moving without the ball, and spacing the floor, he did a nice job of getting his feet set, hands ready so that when the ball came to him he had a clean look.

Freshman basketball, on the boys side specifically, continues to amaze me with the size differential. Guys who are 6-7, 6-8 with full facial hair and then guys like Rebellato hanging around 5-0. But do not judge him by his size. Playing a fearless style, Rebellato crashed the glass and showed some nifty up-and-under layups when he drove into the paint. He is highly skilled and will be a player to keep an eye on as he puts on size in the next couple of years.

One of the better outside shooters that I watched, Walker showed a consistent stroke from 20+ feet out knocking down several in each game. Not just a gunner, Walker showed a nice midrange step-back and the ability to get to the hoop finishing comfortably with either hand. With all that being said, the thing that impressed me, probably the most, was he followed his own 3-point shot, grabbed the rebound, and put back the layup.

If I had an All-Showcase team, the 6-4 Kelley would be on it. His athleticism immediately jumps off of the page with an assortment of dunks, both off of steals, and leading fast breaks. With the ability to get downhill, at will, Kelley was able to get to the rim, showing nice footwork, and a variety of spin moves in the process. Given any space, Kelly was able to knock down 3's as well as multiple from mid-range cementing himself as a true "three-level" scorer.

The amount of freshman talent was off the charts at The Champion Center on Saturday. This week I will be going through evaluations of the four teams that I covered continuing with Team 11.
