Next Up: PSAL 4A Brooklyn/Staten Island I Breakout Candidates

The PSAL annually provides opportunities for new names to emerge, and the 2026-27 season should be no different. Whether it's a talented freshman jumping directly into a varsity rotation, a young player making the move up after impressing at the lower levels, or a returner finally getting the minutes and touches to showcase what he can do, every program has someone capable of taking a significant step forward. We go team by team through the 4A PSAL Brooklyn/Staten Island I division to identify one player from each team who could be poised for a breakout season.    The talented guard comes into the Eagle program from St. Raymond after a solid freshman year with the Ravens. Wired to score, Nelson can get a bucket on all three levels. He has a good enough handle and understanding that he's able to set the table for his teammates as well. Playing in one of the best backcourts in the City should only help him to further develop his game. Look for him to be a jolt of offense whenever he's on the floor.     An athletic guard who excels when he can alternate between scorer and play maker, Hickman is the ideal type of guard to jump into Thomas Jefferson's system and thrive. The Long Island guard has seemingly done just that, creating for his teammates before scoring himself in big moments en route to the Orange Wave capturing the 2026 SmartBall title. College programs should get eyes on him during the season.     Simply put, Morris should be on most short lists for breakout candidates heading into the season. The springy forward has spent his first two seasons on JV, but if his time with [program_tooltip program_id='2078609' first='New' last='Heights'] is any indication- he will waste little time making an impact on Varsity. His length and shot blocking will help him to find the court early, and he has a good bit of skill operating out of the high post. He's a relatively unknown name for now- but that should change in just a couple of months.     One of the best scorers and rebounders returning to Erasmus Hall this Fall- Davis will look to help lead his team to a more competitive season than a year ago. He uses his frame well to create space and plays bigger than his listed 6-foot-1 overall.     The Boys and Girls guard averaged a solid 5 points, 4 boards, and 3 assists a game last year in a more complimentary role. The 5-foot-11 combo guard seems like the ideal fit to replace Sebastian Fontenez. Fellow senior Wayne Boyce will likely also be asked to take a step forward after averaging slightly more- but it's Allen who may take over as the lead guard on this team this season.
