Midwest Fall League: Afternoon Standouts

The Midwest Fall League continued at Queen City Sportsplex on Sunday and in this article I'll break down my afternoon standouts.

Ward was dominant throughout the day and earns my MVP of the week for his play. Catching fire early in the second half, Ward went on a heat check with three straight 3-pointers off pull-up jumpers. A bigger primary ball handler, Ward has good positional size and his impressive vision allowed him to swing the ball all across the court from a variety of angles. Ward's velocity on his passes allowed him to reach any teammate from anywhere on the court with precision and accuracy to set up good shots for his teammates. A piece to know from Moeller's deep 2029 class.

Duy was an efficient scorer for his team, making some tough layups at the rim with an and-1 finish and an acrobatic layup around a shot contest in the game I caught. While he was scoring at the rim, Duy also showed the ability to get hot from beyond the arc as he made shots a few feet behind the line off the catch and off DHO actions. A talented wing scorer, Duy has caught my eye a few times this fall league.

A wing guard who could really pass the ball, Barnett had assists from outlet passes and out of the post. On a team that shared the basketball and moved without the ball, Barnett contributed a lot to the ball movement for his team. Barnett has experience from the varsity level and high level grassroots competition that has helped develop his high feel for the game. Strong connector piece in the fall league!

I'm not sure anybody has gotten more open shots than Ruschau in the fall league. It started on the opening tipoff where his team won the tip, had one pass and Ruschau had a wide open layup. Moving exceptionally well without the basketball, his next bucket was a lefty and-1 finish off a cut. Also knocking down set 3-pointers from the top of the key, wing and corner in the game I saw, Ruschau is a guy you can't let set his feet from long distance. If Ruschau can develop as a ball handler and in the weight room, he could be a nice piece.

Burkart helped his team finish off a tight victory with a key rebound late in the game. Burkart had a handful of key rebounds in the game I saw and has solid height on the wing. Burkart also scored at the rim as his height allowed him to score over smaller players in the paint with either hand. With a high release on his jumper, Burkart could space the floor as well.
