He absorbed contact around the basket, maintained his position and had the strength to come away with the ball against opposing players. Pankey also had reliable hands, allowing him to finish plays once he got a touch on the basketball. He repeatedly came away with missed shots on the defensive end while finding ways to earn additional chances with his work on the offensive boards. Turrell had a good feel for where the ball was coming off the rim and regularly beat opponents to those spots.
