Every recruiting class has players who enter the summer with plenty of buzz, but there are always a handful of prospects quietly putting together strong performances while flying under the radar. As the live periods continue and players head into their junior seasons, these are four 2028 prospects who look poised to see their stock rise significantly over the coming months.

Linney Reed continues to prove that production speaks louder than rankings. The quick, aggressive point guard has been one of the most impactful players on the Adidas 3SSB Gold circuit this spring, helping Team Loaded Gold 16U jump out to an impressive 8-0 start.

At Session 2 in Texas, Reed was outstanding, averaging 28 points per game while consistently making winning plays. His ability to control tempo and make the correct reads within the flow of the offense separates him from many guards his age. Reed doesn't force the action. Instead, he lets the game come to him while still maintaining an attacking mindset.

His speed with the ball, ability to get downhill, and knack for creating opportunities for teammates make him difficult to contain. Despite standing 5-foot-9, he plays with confidence and toughness, routinely finding ways to impact games against bigger opponents. If he continues producing at this level throughout the summer, expect more people around Virginia to start paying attention.

KJ Whaley is another guard who deserves much more attention heading into the second half of the travel season. The left-handed floor general has developed into one of the more efficient guards in the class and consistently finds ways to put pressure on opposing defenses.

Whaley excels when attacking downhill and has a great feel for operating in ball-screen situations. He reads help defenders well and does a nice job balancing his scoring and playmaking responsibilities. What makes him particularly dangerous is his ability to stretch the floor. Defenders can't simply go under screens or give him space because he's capable of knocking down shots from deep at a high rate.

On the defensive end, Whaley is just as impressive. He takes pride in guarding the basketball and routinely makes life difficult for opposing ball handlers. His combination of scoring, playmaking, shooting, and defensive toughness gives him one of the more complete skill sets in Virginia's 2028 class.

Bennett Friday has quietly become one of the more productive and fundamentally sound forwards in the region. He may not always fill the highlight reels, but his effectiveness on the floor is impossible to ignore.

Friday is an efficient scorer who uses his size and physicality extremely well around the basket. He has excellent touch around the rim and consistently converts difficult finishes through contact. His ability to establish deep position and create paint touches allows him to generate offense without needing a high volume of shots.

What stands out most, however, is his feel for the game. Friday is a capable passer who sees the floor well and does a great job finding teammates when defenses collapse on him. He also rebounds at a high level and impacts games in several different ways beyond scoring. As his game continues to expand, don't be surprised if he emerges as one of the more talked-about frontcourt players in the class.

Few guards in Virginia can match the speed and explosiveness that Jemell Smith brings to the floor every time he plays. The Cristo Rey point guard is one of the quickest players in the 2028 class and consistently uses that speed to create advantages on both ends of the court.

Smith is extremely effective attacking the basket and putting pressure on defenses. Once he gets a step on his defender, he is difficult to stay in front of, and his ability to finish or create opportunities for teammates makes him a constant threat. He is also one of the better passers in the class, showing advanced decision-making in ball-screen situations and consistently finding open teammates.

Defensively, Smith's quickness becomes even more valuable. He creates havoc with his on-ball pressure, forces turnovers, and speeds opposing guards up throughout the game. His combination of speed, defensive intensity, and playmaking ability makes him a player college programs will eventually have to take notice of.

Final Thoughts

Virginia's 2028 class continues to develop at an impressive rate, and these four prospects have positioned themselves to make significant jumps over the next several months. Whether it's Reed's scoring explosion on the 3SSB Gold circuit, Whaley's all-around efficiency, Friday's versatility in the frontcourt, or Smith's elite speed and playmaking, each player has shown traits that suggest bigger things are ahead.

As summer events continue and the high school season approaches, expect these names to become increasingly difficult to overlook.
