SWFL Underclassmen on the Rise

With the May Evaluation Period approaching and Division I college coaches set to attend events across the country next weekend, several underclassmen appear poised for a significant uptick in recruiting attention over the coming months.    Thurman is a high upside prospect whose combination of size, athleticism, mobility, and long term potential continues to stand out. The long, lean left handed big man runs the floor extremely well, plays above the rim, and is a constant lob threat in transition and in the half court. Defensively, he impacts the game with his ability to protect the rim while also showing the versatility to switch and guard multiple positions thanks to his foot speed and mobility. He plays with a high motor, competes consistently, and covers a lot of ground defensively. Offensively, Thurman continues to expand his skill set, showing the ability to attack in straight lines from the perimeter while also possessing enough touch and confidence to step out and knock down open perimeter shots. His blend of athletic tools, defensive versatility, and developing offensive skill make him one of the more intriguing long term prospects in the class.     Coming off a strong high school season that saw him average 17.5 points per game and earn First Team All-Area honors for the Seahawks, the skilled combo guard continues to elevate his stock. Vetor possesses good foot speed, plays with confidence, and is capable of impacting the game as both a scorer and playmaker. A reliable shot maker with range, he can create offense off the bounce and knock down perimeter shots consistently. He also plays with toughness, competes on both ends of the floor, and shows the high basketball IQ that college coaches value. In addition to his ability on the court, he projects as a high academic prospect at the next level.     Thurman's teammate at Lehigh, Downs emerged as the Lightning's leading scorer this season at 14.6 points per game while consistently showing the traits of a skilled and dependable lead guard. Smart, poised, and fundamentally sound, he plays with excellent command of the basketball and makes reliable decisions with the ball in his hands. Downs does a very good job using ball screens to create offense, keeps defenders off balance, and can score from multiple areas of the floor. He is a capable perimeter shot maker who also sees the floor well and consistently creates opportunities for teammates as a passer and playmaker. Defensively, he has good instincts, anticipates well, and competes consistently at the point of attack.     A First Team All-Area selection, Lopez led Palmetto Ridge this season with 14.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while consistently impacting games with his activity level and toughness. The junior plays with a high motor and brings steady production on both ends of the floor. He has good touch around the basket, finishes well in the paint, and has a good feel for the game. Lopez is also a relentless rebounder who attacks the glass at both ends of the floor, creating extra possessions and consistently competing in traffic. His combination of effort, instincts, and productivity continues to make him a valuable prospect to track moving forward.     Taylor is a strong, physical ball handling guard with positional size who averaged 13.0 points, 3.8 rebounds, and 3.5 assists per game for FBA this season. The junior plays with confidence and poise, showing the ability to impact the game as both a scorer and playmaker. He is very effective getting downhill, where he uses his strength and body control to finish with either hand and through contact in the paint. Taylor is also a reliable perimeter shooter who can make defenses pay from the outside when defenders sag off. Taylor has a high basketball IQ, makes solid decisions with the ball, and projects as an impactful high academic prospect at the next level.
