Yesterday, I attended Zero Gravity's Rumble For The Ring, a tournament featuring mostly local teams who aren't competing in this weekend's UAA, 3SSB, or EYBL competitions.

I posted up at Starland Sportsplex in Hanover, MA, and took in action from a bunch of the high school divisions.

Markovitz looked like a man amongst boys all Saturday for BABC National HGSL. The 6-foot-4 forward was the biggest player on the court for both of their Saturday games, but he was also the hardest working and highest energy player, which is a deadly combo. He was dominant on the offensive and defensive glass, and he couldn't be stopped as a finisher in the paint, especially with his strong left hand. Markovitz can pass the ball well for his size and also has a nice-looking shot, so the future is bright for him. He has some “stuff” to him, too (if you know what I mean), and I love the way he competes every possession even in a blowout. Tough kid who you do not want to get riled up.

MacLean is an intriguing long-term prospect because of his size, skillset, and projected growth. The West Bridgewater sophomore is 6-foot-3 and extremely long, and he has guard skills. He can handle it against pressure, he can pass the ball, and he can shoot and score from the mid range and perimeter. He also knows how to cut without the ball and is a super willing passer. MacLean is nowhere near a finished product, but I really like his movement patterns and skillset and am pretty confident he will keep getting better and putting it all together. He should also have a reclass year ahead if he wants it. He's a guy who could look QUITE different in a couple years.

Brown does ALL the little things for Matt Brewer's Magic squad. He's 6-foot-4 and long, but he also has great strength and toughness. He can guard all 5 positions—he'll use his physical tools to stick with larger players in the post but slides his feet extremely well on the perimeter with guards—so he's quite versatile on that end. Offensively, he has a knack for finishing with his strong left hand, and he's a willing and able passer when the help comes. Brown will only continue to improve as he gets older, and he should have a reclass year available at a prep school if he wants it. Tough, strong kid.

Flores is ridiculously intriguing. The 6-foot-3 wing was all over the floor for Metro Boston on Saturday, making plays on both ends and showing off a strong motor and competitive spirit. He can use his length and athleticism to score at the rim with both hands, but he also has a nice-looking shot from three and a good ball-handling feel, so he can shimmy his way to the paint from the perimeter if he's pressured. Flores is a good passer, too, and just understands how to play the game. The junior is at Lynnfield High School right now and should be a key player for them next season if he decides to stay. He'll also have a reclass tear down the road if he wants it, which could be important for his development and college hopes.

Phillips is another intriguing forward who is far from a finished product but shows extremely solid foundational skills and physical tools. The 6-foot-3 wing has super long arms and better hands than you'd think, so he's effective in the dunker spot and as a cutter. But he also has some wiggle to his game and a bit of finesse at the rim when he's faced with shot blocking and strength. His shot is decent, but he makes it enough to force the defense to guard him on the perimeter, which is what's most important. Phillips should be a key guy for Braintree High School next season and is going to look a lot different in a couple years if I had to guess. Once he puts some weight on, he'll be a massive threat from everywhere, because he already has the toughness and desire to take contact.

Panda is 6-foot-7 and looks relatively raw/uncoordinated at first glance, but you just need to watch him more. He's comfortable attacking closeouts and making smart passes to his teammates (his ability to see over the defense helps here), and he can knock down threes with the best of them—his shot is quick and accurate. He's a finesse finisher in the paint, too, and is only going to get more physical and athletic as time goes on. With a good number of guys leaving Bevery High School next season, Panda should be a key part of what they do. His reps with the Magic this spring/summer and with Beverly next winter should be a massive pivot point for him and his development.
