The conclusion of the 2025-26 regular season is nearly upon us. One week of action remains before the start of district tournaments the week of Feb. 23. There's plenty of basketball left to the be played and many districts are coming down to the wire. Here is how every District in Class 5A looks right now.

District 5A-1: It's a three-team Battle Royale between Volcano Vista (19-4, 7-1), Rio Rancho (21-3, 6-2) and Cleveland (20-4, 6-2). They are the top three ranked teams in the state by MaxPreps. Every time they clash, the games are close and hard fought. Volcano Vista's thrilling 61-59 victory over Rio Rancho Tuesday night on a clutch do-or-die 3-pointer by [player_tooltip player_id='2743220' first='Finley' last='Fitak'] was simply the latest can't-miss moment. Circle your calendar: Volcano Vista at Cleveland on Feb. 17 and Rio Rancho at Cleveland on Feb. 19. Those two games will decide the regular season district title and possibly affect seeding for the state tournament.

District 5A-2: Either La Cueva (18-6, 7-1) or Sandia (17-7, 7-1) will win the district regular season title. Those teams split their two regular season meetings. Most recently, Sandia beat the Bears, 60-58, in a thriller on Feb. 6. Barring an upset in the final week, La Cueva and Sandia will finish tied for first, requiring tiebreakers to be utilized to determine which team receives the No. 1 seed for the district tournament. Fourth-place Eldorado (13-10, 4-4) may have saved their season with Thursday night's key 37-22 road win at third-place Santa Fe (14-10, 5-3). The Demons are faltering down the stretch with four losses in their last six games, and their final two regular season contests are on the road at La Cueva and Sandia.

District 5A-3: The latest Circle of Basketball moment in this district came Friday night when Organ Mountain beat Las Cruces, 49-45, at the Castle. That result, together with Centennial's rout of Gadsden, propelled the Hawks into sole possession of first place in the district standings. Right now, Centennial (17-7, 7-1) is one game ahead of Las Cruces (21-3, 6-2) and two games ahead of Organ Mountain (14-10, 5-3) in the district. How deep is this district? Fourth place Mayfield (15-9, 4-4) has already beaten Organ Mountain and lost to Las Cruces in overtime and by just five points to Centennial. The regular season concludes Friday night with a bang: Centennial at Las Cruces on Feb. 20. The district tournament is going to be boatloads of fun. Expect the unexpected.

District 5A-4: This four-team district (smallest on Class 5A) has boiled down to a battle between Carlsbad 17-7, 4-1) and Hobbs (16-9, 4-1). The Cavemen edged Hobbs, 52-46, in an OT thriller on Feb. 6. Those two teams will have their rematch on Friday night in the regular season finale. That contest at Hobbs should decide the regular season district title.

District 5A-5: Albuquerque High (16-8, 6-0) has secured the district regular season title. The Bulldogs have a 1.5 game lead over second-place Atrisco Heritage (16-9, 5-2). However, the Jaguars have just one district regular season game remaining, so they can't catch AHS in the standings. Technically, both teams could finish 6-2 if Albuquerque High suffers unlikely upsets at the hands of Rio Grande and West Mesa in the final week. Even if they did, the Bulldogs swept Atrisco Heritage in district play, winning the two games by a combined 26 points, so they own the tiebreaker.
