Thursday Standouts: Bellevue West vs Lincoln North Star

<!-- wp:paragraph --> <p>I was in the gym for the top-ten Class A matchup between Bellevue West and Lincoln North Star. These are two teams that have a very good shot of making some noise in March, and that was on display Thursday night. North Star had a 17-point lead at halftime as a result of a 22-4 2nd quarter due to a swarming defense that led to transition buckets. The Thunderbirds wouldn't go down easily, as they clawed their way back into the game, but North Star was able to hold on for a 67-60 win. He continues to be one of the most impressive and dynamic players in the entire state, and it is easy to see why. He has an incredible feel for the game, as he has every finish and every pass in his bag. His ability to adjust his body in the air allows him to draw contact and finish at the rim. He has true point guard instincts, as he can handle the ball very well and always seems to be under control. He was crafty in transition and also demonstrated an ability to get downhill. This was also an excellent night for him from deep, as he was 3/6 from behind the arc, including some off the dribble. You could tell that the Thunderbird defense was making sure to locate him at all times. In spite of this, he was 2/6 from three, and you could tell that he knows how to position himself to get open looks when his teammates drive. He was also 5/6 from the line, which is always important in close games against top competition. He does a very good job of attacking downhill, as most of the North Star guards couldn't keep him in front. He is especially a handful in transition, where he was attacking the rim and finding teammates. He regularly drew contact, and he finished 6/8 from the line. He was often the point of attack defender for North Star, and he seemed to relish that role. He had a good night shooting the ball, as he was 2/3 from three, including a huge 4-point play in the fourth quarter. Gatwech was a huge reason why, as it felt like he was everywhere during that run. He is a shifty, long, and athletic player, and when you combine that with his motor, you see how he makes an impact on the game. His perimeter defense was impactful, which is especially impressive at his size. He also showed that he can post up inside. He got the gym rocking with a transition dunk as he showed off his athleticism. He fit right in with the speed and physicality, demonstrating great poise and feel for the game. They had him bringing the ball up at times, and he was an active defender. He was efficient from the field, going 2/3 from two and 1/1 from three. Jackson is a player who should continue to grow over the next few years and will be an exciting player.
