Portland, OR — HoopSource's annual Presidents' Day Nationals once again brought together some of the top grassroots programs in the country for a packed weekend of competition in the Pacific Northwest. As a key stop on the winter circuit, the event featured three days of intense matchups, giving prospects a prime opportunity to showcase their skill sets against quality opposition. With a deep field of teams in attendance, plenty of players made their mark. In this edition of our coverage, we highlight the top defenders from the 8th-grade division — the players who took on the toughest matchups, applied consistent pressure, and changed the game with their activity and toughness on that end of the floor…

Jayden Hale's combination of athleticism, length, and size allowed him to defend multiple positions at a high level throughout the HoopSource Presidents' Day Nationals. He used his frame and lateral mobility to switch seamlessly across matchups, holding his own on the perimeter while also providing strength inside. Hale closed out with control, contested shots with his reach, and showed the foot speed to stay in front of ball handlers. His versatility on the defensive end gave his team flexibility, as he consistently impacted possessions regardless of who he was matched up against.

Kavion Johnson made his presence felt at the HoopSource Presidents' Day Nationals by shutting down opposing guards with his speed, agility, and athleticism. He consistently pressured the ball at the point of attack, sliding his feet to wall off driving lanes and force difficult attempts. Johnson fought over screens, stayed attached through changes of direction, and used active hands to disrupt rhythm without putting himself out of position. His ability to contain quick backcourt players and set the tone defensively stood out each time he stepped on the floor.

Chase Oliver continued to show that he is a true lockdown, on-the-ball defender at the HoopSource Presidents' Day Nationals. He applied relentless pressure at the point of attack, crowding opposing ball handlers and making every catch uncomfortable. Oliver stayed disciplined with his footwork, cut off driving lanes, and forced opponents to operate outside of their comfort zones. His intensity and commitment to guarding the basketball set the tone defensively and consistently disrupted offensive flow.

Kingston Ratcliffe utilized his length, athleticism, and positional versatility to establish himself as a true lockdown presence at the HoopSource Presidents' Day Nationals. He consistently embraced tough assignments and used his wingspan to disrupt passing lanes and contest shots. Ratcliffe covered significant ground defensively, closing out under control while still having the lateral quickness to slide and contain off the bounce. His ability to switch across multiple positions and recover in help situations made him a constant deterrent, anchoring his team's defensive effort whenever he was on the floor.

Charlie White brought an aggressive, scrappy defensive presence to the HoopSource Presidents' Day Nationals. He competed with edge and urgency on every possession, applying pressure to the ball and fighting for positioning off it. White wasn't afraid to mix it up, diving for loose balls, battling through screens, and challenging opponents physically. His toughness and willingness to embrace contact consistently disrupted rhythm and gave his team an added spark on the defensive end.

Stay tuned for more from Prep Hoops Next!
