Maryvale beats MTV down the stretch (Fr, JV, V Standouts)

On Saturday January 17th I attended the match-up of 6A Mesa Mountain View Toros hosting the 6A Maryvale Panthers. Both teams should be in the 6A playoffs and the Panthers could upset a team or two.   I checked out all three levels with Freshman, JV and Varsity.   <h2 class="wp-block-heading">Here were the standouts on the night </h2>   Freshman Game (66-56 Maryvale won)   [player_tooltip player_id='3373093' first='Juelian' last='Ramon'] Maryvale    An undersized scoring lead guard who can fill it up with quick drives to the basket, threes off the catch, crow hops with some quickness and mid-range jumpers. He threw a couple dimes in traffic with drive and kicks and thru the defense. He is also quick to collect steals with some length. He scored 14 points.    [player_tooltip player_id='3373071' first='Jalen' last='Smith'] Maryvale    A long scoring guard who can hit the three and plays the passing lanes to collect steals. He has some feel for the game to make plays. He is a good rebounder for his position using his longer arms and will block shots and collect steals. He just started playing the sport but the son of the head coach has natural upside with big feet. He scored 17 points.    [player_tooltip player_id='3366002' first='Lance' last='Bingham'] Mountain View Mesa    A good sized power forward who moves well from end to end. He has a quicker burst using long strides to get to the basket. He will score with offensive rebound put backs and he smartly keeps the ball high when he rebounds. He will also get trips to the FT line and scored 9 points in only two quarters.    [player_tooltip player_id='3373044' first='Colton' last='Cox'] Mountain View Mesa    A combo guard who can play on or off the ball. He handles some of the lead position but will slide over and shoot it from the three point line off the catch. He has a pure shooting stroke with picture perfect form and he can also get a step on his defender. He scored 12 points.     Junior Varsity Game (MTV won)   [player_tooltip player_id='2682498' first='Banks' last='Wolfe'] Mountain View Mesa    A throw back pure point guard. The ball is on a string for him and has next level court vision. He is always moving the ball and makes the right pass. He will score with threes off the catch or pull and scored around 10 points with multiple assists.       [player_tooltip player_id='2682496' first='Braden' last='Harvey'] Mountain View Mesa    A combo guard has nice looking three point stroke. He has a sneaky tight handle and sees the court well. He has one of those strokes that look good every time. He has a burst of speed to get downhill with his tighter handle and can make plays.  He scored 14+ points.    [player_tooltip player_id='3390623' first='Will' last='Johnson'] Mountain View Mesa    A good sized face-up power forward who moves well from end to end. He is very patient to score inside the paint but he will step out and shoot the three off the catch. He came off the bench but produced immediately. He will battle inside to rebound and scored 10+ points.     [player_tooltip player_id='2681045' first='Matthew' last='Favreau'] Mountain View Mesa   A power forward is a natural rebounder in and out of his area. He has a nice hook shot and he is effective inside the basket. He rebounds well in his area and he is a smart passer when he gets double teamed. He brings good energy to the court.   [player_tooltip player_id='2674099' first='Jose' last='Garcia Jr'] Maryvale   A tough and fearless undersized scoring lead guard. He has a good feel for the game and passes up the court in stride. He has deep three point range off the catch or he will pull-up off the dribble from mid-range and scored close to 20 points and 4 points on varsity.   [player_tooltip player_id='2957459' first='Meqhi' last='Teutsch'] Maryvale    A hyper athletic wing forward is a fluid mover who rebounds well and defends multiple positions. He showed off his bounce with some dunks attempts, he will rip thru and get on the glass. He plays and defends multiple positions and scored close to 10 points.     [player_tooltip player_id='3373677' first='Saul' last='Alvarez'] Maryvale   A scoring combo guard can score it from most levels and play on or off the ball. He is a deep three point shooter and he will cut off the ball and score with runners and get trips to the free throw line. He scored around 10 points.    Varsity Game (61-58 Maryvale won)   [player_tooltip player_id='2466067' first='Adrian' last='Stubbs'] Maryvale    A tough scoring point guard was in foul trouble but still fought all game and made the winning plays down the stretch in a close game. He had some incredible live dribble passes that led to buckets. He scored with step back threes, tough baskets in traffic, blow by's to the basket, mid-range pull-ups, post ups and contested fall aways. He will hustle for loose balls and rebounds well. He scored 13 points with multiple assists and steals.    [player_tooltip player_id='2849553' first='Mikel' last='Montgomery'] Maryvale    A thicker farmed combo guard loves getting downhill. The lefty will euro step to the basket and uses his dominant left hand and hesitates to get downhill. He has a tough in and out dribble to get to the rim but he will hit the three off the catch. He rebounds well with his stronger frame and scored 15 points.     [player_tooltip player_id='2956985' first='Elijah' last='Antoine'] Maryvale    A stud freshmen is a guard/wing with some size will score it at the rim. He will score with offensive rebound put backs, euro steps, slashes to the basket with advanced body control and has a plus feel to make a play. He scored 10 points and looks to be one of their future pieces.     [player_tooltip player_id='2674271' first='Travis' last='Dean'] Maryvale   A highly skilled power forward can dribble drive to the basket but prefers to to face-up. He will hit the three off the catch and loves the corners. He rebounds well in his area and scored 8 points.    [player_tooltip player_id='2953319' first='Keith' last='Harrison'] Maryvale   A long wing forward who moves well in space to defend multiple positions. He will block shots in and out of his area. He can dunk it on the break and he made a key layup down the stretch. He scored 4 points and shows upside.      [player_tooltip player_id='2337276' first='Brig' last='Standage'] Mountain View Mesa   A bigger sized scoring guard is quickly improving and so is his athleticism. He will dunk it in the lane and dribble drive to the basket, crow hop into a hook shot and has plus body control. He makes his money with his premier shooting from the three point line and he will pull-up from mid-range. He rebounds well with his improved bounce and will block shots. He scored 20 points.   [player_tooltip player_id='3005784' first='Tyler' last='Mortensen'] Mountain View Mesa   A long and tall fluid power forward will score with offensive rebound put backs and he is a very good rebounder due to his length and obvious size. He blocks shots impressively getting off the floor quickly. He will euro step down the lane, he is slowly starting to face-up to the three point line and can rip thru to the basket. He is very long to grab steals and scored 7 points with multiple blocks.    [player_tooltip player_id='2681054' first='Jude' last='Rose'] Mesa Mountain View    A skilled scoring lead guard who can thread the needle to teammates. He scores with threes with deep range one by one when he's hot. He is quick to the basket to get downhill and he will defend. He scored 10 points with a couple of steals and took a charge.    [player_tooltip player_id='3005954' first='Brady' last='Ernst'] Mountain View Mesa    An undersized but skilled scoring lead guard is a tough lefty. He likes getting downhill and will hit tough shots off the glass, with mid-range pull-ups and he will score it in traffic over the shot blockers. He finished with 12 points.   [player_tooltip player_id='2812175' first='Jestin' last='Romero'] Mountain View Mesa    A skilled combo guard can dribble drive to the basket to score. He will grab out of area rebounds and will score it with offensive rebound put backs. He will score with inside baskets and he can quickly spin off of his defenders. He finished with 7 points.
