He keeps a great line to the hoop on drives, and he has enough heft to take contact well in the air. The Lawrence High School senior can shoot it a bit from the outside, too, but I'm more impressed with his ability to find his teammates once he touches the paint. I do like Torres' mid range game, though, which he gets to quite often. He'll have to get quicker and better from the perimeter if he wants to be a good college player, but he's an awesome MIAA wing who will be a key part of a good LHS team all season.

Perez is a fun player to watch. He's only 5-foot-10 and fairly skinny, but he has incredible hands on defense and consistently got back-tap steals on Tuesday against tons of different ball handlers; he has awesome timing and really understands when to attack the offensive player. Offensively, the senior is quick and shifty with the ball and has solid vision in the lane, though he struggles against bigger and stronger players. Some added strength would be huge for his college hopes, but I wouldn't be surprised if he makes it happen.

Though St. John's Prep had troubles with the aggressive Lawrence defense in Tuesday's 7th place game, Perez was a bright spot in terms of his ability to score from both the perimeter and the paint. He hit a good number of outside shots to keep SJP in the game, and he also excelled as a driver and finisher and in transition. Defensively, his size and strength allows him to guard a wide variety of MIAA players. Perez is a good piece for a SJP squad that should make some noise this year.

With foul trouble to North Andover's star player, Martin was tasked with taking on the scoring and playmaking role on Tuesday, and he rose to the occasion. The 6-foot combo guard has really solid strength and keeps his line well on drives to the rim; though he doesn't fly, he does a good job taking contact and finishing at the hoop. And he has a nice looking outside shot, too, which he could continue to make more consistent. Martin could be a college player if he continues to improve his handle and quickness.

Sanchez is a strong-bodied 6-foot-2 wing who does a good job getting to the rim and getting off his mid range shot. He is a really solid passer in the paint, and MIAA players bounce off of him when he decides to bully his way to the rim, though some added quickness and outside shooting would make him much more of a threat on the offensive end. Sanchez is probably a college player, but he needs to improve his motor and shore up some of his offensive skills—the foundation is there, though.

Pena is a super intriguing long-term prospect who's able to compete comfortably at the highest level of MIAA hoops as a sophomore. The 6-foot-3 forward does a really good job finishing with patience, touch, and strength, and he even had a really electric up-and-under lefty reverse that surprised me during Tuesday's championship matchup. He's a really solid athlete who should only continue to get stronger and more athletic as he gets older. That being said, it's impressive that he's able to play at this level with this amount of pressure right now. Bright future ahead for Pena.

On Tuesday, December 30th, I attended the Commonwealth Motors Christmas Classic at Merrimack College in North Andover, MA. There were 7th place, 5th place, 3rd place, and championship games, and I watched all of them.
