The Cobre High gym is probably where you'll find senior [player_tooltip player_id='2693613' first='Zavin' last='Guck'] and sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2714599' first='Izon' last='Guck']. Both rank among the top prospects in their respective classes (2026 and 2028).

Largely because of the Guck brothers, Cobre (14-3) is a legitimate contender to make a deep in the Class 3A state tournament in March. Monday's night's 57-46 home victory over local rival Silver was a typical Guck brothers performance – they combined for 36 points, drained 11-of-11 free throws, grabbed 8 rebounds, dished out 4 assists and made 5 steals on defense against a very good Colts team that came into the game with a 9-6 record.

Cobre will carry a seven-game winning streak into Thursday night's non-district road showdown at Tularosa (16-2). The Indians and Wildcats are ranked No. 5 and No. 6 in the latest Class 3A MaxPreps computer ranking.

Cobre begins District 3A-3 play on Feb. 3 against Hot Springs. The four-team district also includes Socorro and Hatch Valley.

Through 17 games, 6-foot-5 [player_tooltip player_id='2693613' first='Zavin' last='Guck'] is averaging 20.9 points, 8.0 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game, while 6-foot-2 [player_tooltip player_id='2714599' first='Izon' last='Guck'] is averaging 18.8 points, 7.8 rebounds and 2.9 steals. Together, the Gucks are averaging 39.7 points, 15.8 rebounds, 5.9 steals and 4.6 assists per game.

The Gucks have scored 60 percent of Cobre's points (675 of 1,135) so far in 2025-26 and connected on 57.84 percent of their total shot attempts. They've combined for 43 3-pointers. Izon has developed into one of the top 3-points shooters in Class 3A as he's made 51.0 percent of his shots (25-51) from beyond the arc this season.
