Zac Borrego is back.

After spending the 2024-25 season in Louisiana, where he helped spark his school (Metairie Park Country Day) to the LHSAA Select Division III state championship, to be closer to his father, NBA coach James Borrego, Zac Borrego has returned to New Mexico and will play for Albuquerque Academy in 2025-26, an intriguing plot twist to the Class 4A championship chase.

“I'm very excited to be back,” Zac Borrego told Prep Hoops New Mexico. “Albuquerque is home for me. I love the community here and how it's built me up over the years, so I'm very pleased to be back.”

The 6-foot-3 Borrego impressed scouts and analysts in Louisiana with his poise, patience, leadership skills and knack for being around the ball and making big plays.

“My year in Louisiana was great,” Borrego said. “I learned a lot of valuable lessons and skills during my time there. I was around a lot of smart and talented individuals. I learned how to win tough games as my team managed to win three straight upsets on our way to a state championship in a very tough division.”

Borrego was ranked No. 5 in Prep Hoops New Mexico's 2027 prospect rankings when he left for Louisiana last summer. His solid play for Metairie Park Country Day paid off with his first Division I offer from Southern Utah of the WAC. He's also visited Butler and Indiana Wesleyan.

“I'm a competitor on both ends,” Borrego said. “I enjoy getting stops on defense and turning those into offense. I'm able to break guys down and make shots off the dribble and off the catch in the half court. I like to elevate my teammates around me.

While Artesia returns every key player from their Class 4A state championship team, Borrego's returns now makes Albuquerque Academy a legitimate 4A state championship contender as well. The Chargers reached the 4A state tournament semifinals before losing to Highland in March. Six-foot-10 center [player_tooltip player_id='1717250' first='Hunter' last='Aime'] returns for his senior season for Albuquerque Academy.

“The summer is going great so far,” Borrego said. “We're in the gym working every day to reach our goals. We're excited to get our full team together and compete. Hunter is poised to dominate the state this year. We have a lot of other impressive weapons this year. We're ready to put the state on notice. We have a ton of respect for the competition in 4A. In order to be the last team standing this coming season, we're going to have to work extremely hard and stick together all the way through March.“
