At first, I was hesitant as it was a disappointing loss but decided to agree with Drake as he has been one of the best leaders I've ever coached. I'm really glad we did as after a while it was nothing but telling funny stories...lots of laughs."

PHD: How did your team overcome adversity?

"Our guys battled all season long. We were down nine points to Bottineau with about 3:50 left and in a timeout, Drake said 'lets just fight really hard these next 3 minutes and see what happens'. As a coaching staff, we kind of stepped back and let the kids play and sure enough, we were able to win a very close game."

PHD: What are a few things your team improved on?

"We improved our efficiency over the course of the season. [player_tooltip player_id='2237729' first='Ben' last='Hynek'] was our second leading scorer from last year and was extremely efficient. He led us in 3-point % with 43% on the year. He's going to have to improve his off-ball defense and will have to step up another notch for us to be successful next year. [player_tooltip player_id='2132775' first='Jevon' last='Johnson'] is going to have to be a leader for our team. He'll be responsible for setting our pace and taking care of the ball. As an undersized post player, he led us in rebounding 7 times. He also has the ability to step out and knock down the 3 which opened up the lane for our perimeter players to attack the rim. Landon is also a good leader and understands the game of basketball. Landon averaged 6.5 ppg, 4.6 rpg while shooting 71% from the FT line."

With Coach Ralph

PHD: How would you sum up the season?

"I think we finished about where we thought we were capable. Kindred was a tough matchup for everyone, us included, and to finish in 2nd in the Region was what we had hoped for. We're hoping those wins will lead to more state appearances in the future."

PHD: Can you tell us about some fun memories?

"I think our 7th place win over Killdeer at State was one of the highlights for our team. We lost by 6 to them earlier this season so for us to come away with a 20-point victory was great. The win over Four Winds in the State Qualifier game was another win that saw us explode offensively and cruise to a win. We didn't have a lot of games that we were solidly in control of this season because of the strength of our schedule, so it was fun to see our bench and crowd so excited."

PHD: How did you overcocme adversity?

"We had a stretch of games in early January where we lost 4 of 5 and had forgotten that defense and rebounding is what wins for us. One of our captains, [player_tooltip player_id='1184569' first='Treyton' last='Mauch'], spoke up at a film session and told the team that our effort wasn't good enough and that had to change from that point, we really stepped up our defense and rebounding and went 13-5 to end the season."

"Losing [player_tooltip player_id='2339217' first='Jack' last='Gilbertson'] at Devils Lake to a shoulder injury was also a big loss for our team. Jack was averaging 12 points per game at that point in the season and had scored 6 points early in that game before his injury. Jack provided a solid defender along with his ability to get into the lane and score. Our other guys picked up the lost scoring, but we definitely missed Jack's presence in the games that he missed."

PHD: What did your team improve on this season?

"I think our biggest improvement came on the boards after our game with Hillsboro at home. From that point on, we did a great job on the glass and that limited our opponents' scoring opportunities. We were undersized in most games so our ability to rebound was a big factor in our games."

PHD: Who were some of your role players who did well?

"[player_tooltip player_id='2630828' first='Jackson' last='DeVries'] played a big role for us on the perimeter. He wasn't a big scorer, but his ability to get out in transition and score led so 2-3 baskets per game. He also did a great job defensively every night. His stats didn't show what he did but he was a big part of our success this season."

"I also thought our combo 5 man of [player_tooltip player_id='1798698' first='Landon' last='Ralph'] and [player_tooltip player_id='2751295' first='Alex' last='Comings'] in mid to late January through February did a great job for us. With Landon averaging 7 ppg along with 5 rebounds and Alex averaging 3 points and 3 rebounds, meant we had nearly a double-double in that position. Each of them presented a different offensive ability with Landon stepping out and knocking down 3's and Alex scoring around the rim."

PHD: Can you tell us about your seniors?

"Our three seniors ([player_tooltip player_id='1184569' first='Treyton' last='Mauch'], [player_tooltip player_id='2630828' first='Jackson' last='DeVries'], [player_tooltip player_id='1531966' first='Bjorn' last='Kubela']) were all good leaders that had one goal in mind: WIN. They weren't concerned with who was scoring or rebounding or getting the shots, they just want the team to do well. Each of them led us in scoring or rebounding nearly every game and all of them were great at distributing the ball to the open man. Their sacrifice for the team is exactly what we're looking for in senior leadership."

PHD: Who are some up-and-comers to keep track of?

"Junior, [player_tooltip player_id='2335331' first='Carter' last='Hockert'] will be called upon to provide a defensive and scoring punch for us this season. Treyton has the ability to score the basketball off the dribble and is a good perimeter shooter. At 6'3”, he's going to be a tough guy to guard the next three years. I'm excited to see what he can do for us in the future."

"Sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2237730' first='Aiden' last='Bontjes'] also spent a lot of time rehabbing his injured knee and never really got going until February. He's got the ability to knock down 3's and has long arms to defend on the perimeter. We're looking for him to be in the mix next season."

"Freshman [player_tooltip player_id='2839991' first='Cooper' last='Koolmo'] is another player who could possibly be looking for playing time next season. He's a good handler who can score from the 3-point line and get to the rim and finish."

PHD: Who was your best defender?

"[player_tooltip player_id='1184569' first='Treyton' last='Mauch'] was hands down our best defender. His speed, quickness, jumping ability and hard-nosed demeanor meant we could depend on him to guard any perimeter player. He took great pride in locking down his guy and was willing to sacrifice his scoring to do his job defensively."

PHD: Who was your top interior player?

"Once we inserted [player_tooltip player_id='1798698' first='Landon' last='Ralph'] into the starting lineup in the Beulah game on January 24, our defense and rebounding improved. Landon provided a defensive presence that we sorely needed. He is a solid rebounder and got better throughout the season. He also provided 3-point shooting, which helped to draw out post defenders so our perimeter scorers had open lanes to score."

PHD: Any last thoughts?

"We lose 3 very good players, but I believe our underclassmen are waiting for their chance to step up and compete at the varsity level.
