to do in his high school career – determine where he’d be playing his college basketball. The two-time state champ and player of the year at Baker High School mulled things over after the season ended and after talking things over with his family, came to a conclusion – he wanted to stay nearby. Jones announced this week that he’ll be continuing his playing and academic career at Eastern Oregon University.
“I think the main thing for me was the fit,” Jones said. “It’s close to home and the coach – he reached out after my junior season last year so we’ve had a pretty good connection and have grown closer since then. I liked the smaller feel as I was kind knew I wanted to go to a smaller school and throughout the summer and fall, I went to a few open gyms and kind of got to see what they were like and what they’re about. I liked what I saw and kind of what they wanted to do.”
Jones also a roster spot offer from George Fox and had been contacted by a number of other schools at different levels. But not surprisingly it was nearby Eastern Oregon Chris Kemp that reached out early and built a relationship with Jones, and in the end that paid off. He’s the first commit from the Class of 2025 for the Mountaineers and he’s ready to take his talents to La Grande.
“I’ll kind of have more of an idea when the roster is finalized, but I think that I just want to bring a hardworking mentality that will go a long ways and just be a good example,” Jones said. “I want to keep getting stronger in the weight room and also work on my lateral quickness, my shiftiness side to side, and also having a better handle, keeping it tight. And maybe, I don’t think my defense necessarily, just because defense is kind of heart, but offensively I want to be consistent on my jump shots – mostly threes.”
Our congratulations go out to Jones and his family on his commitment. He finished as the #26 player in the final Class of 2025 rankings.
