It's the final run for [player_tooltip player_id='2458239' first='Gavin' last='Hall'], and the Western Christian senior is having the time of his life. The skilled 5-foot-10 guard and returning 2A Player of the Year has played up to all expectations, taking on the leadership role for the team and leading them into Pendleton and the 2A State Tournament as the prohibitive favorites. There were some brief concerns going into the year as there was a sudden coaching change, but once the shock of everything wore off Hall and his teammates simply went back to balling out.

"All we did was just trust our coach, trust everyone around us and just know that everyone that's here on our team, whether it's coach, our players, we're just all family," Hall said. "All of us came together and just grind it out and have a great season."

Hall has unquestionably been the catalyst with everything - which included a historic upset of Chatsworth (Calif.) in the opening round of the Capitol City Classic. The Pioneers have simply cruised on as the guard has led them to win after win, embracing a role where he's the target of every opposing defense.

"I would say since like my freshman year, it's evolved in like every aspect," Hall said of his game. "For my freshman year, I was more of just like a role player and I just knew my role, gave the guys who needed to score the ball. And now that I'm in this position, I am kind of that guy, I guess you could say. So I have to score the ball, I have to make it on defense and do all that now."

Offensively, Hall is super skilled. He's a knockdown three-point shooter - his state-record 14 made threes in a record-setting 69-point performance against Chemawa attested to that - but he's also so gifted at creating off the dribble and then using advanced footwork to fake out opponents in the lane and get himself free for shots against bigger opponents. He divulged some of his secrets.

"Every practice, we have a drill, a duck drill and it's all about footwork - that's what we do," Hall said. "So, just for many years, we just kept on practicing the same footwork and stuff. Once you do that, it becomes muscle memory and then you can do it in games like that."

As brilliant a career Hall has put together in high school, he hasn't quite gotten as much recruiting attention as he would have hoped. He is hearing from a trio of schools from the Division III Northwest Conference in George Fox, Willamette, and Linfield and has a current favorite, but is certainly open to hearing from more.

"I don't know why, but this has been difficult," Hall said. "I feel like everyone's, they're like, they're just not giving me a look, you know? I think it's because I'm not as tall as some of their prospects. But I'd love to go to Willamette. That's my top pick, even though I don't have any offers right now, but that's like where I'd like to go. I'm definitely look for like a family aspect, like, it is up here. Kind of like a good culture, and a coach that let us push the pace and just play our defense, play hard."

The right college opportunity will certainly come - for now, Hall's focus is on the 2A state tournament where the Pioneers opened up play with a win over East Linn Christian. What will it take for Western Christian to come away with a repeat title? It's simple if you ask the senior. "Everyone just needs to keep buying in and just coming together," Hall said.

Hall currently ranks as the #106 player in the PrepHoops Oregon Class of 2025 rankings.
