In three weeks, the 2025 New Mexico boys basketball playoffs will begin with first-round matchups at various home sites. The quarterfinals will be played Wednesday, March 12 at the Pit In Albuquerque (Class 5A and 4A), Rio Rancho Events Center (Class 3A and 2A) and Bernalillo High School (Class 1A). Here's how Class 2A and 1A look right now in mid-February.

CLASS 2A: Three teams with 20 victories are battling for the No. 1 seed in the state tournament – Texico (20-2, 8-0), Santa Rosa (20-3) and Mesa Vista (20-4). Three-point sharpshooter [player_tooltip player_id='2833696' first='Jett' last='Curtis'], who tied the state record for most triples in a single game before the record was broken twice, leads the Texico offense. Texico has a two-game lead over Jal (14-10, 6-2) in the district standings and travels to Jal on Tuesday. . .Santa Rosa is 7-0 in District 2A-6 but leads No. 4 Pecos (14-9, 6-1) by just one game in the district standings. Those two teams meet Saturday night (2/15) in Santa Rosa. A Lions win would clinch no worse than a tie for the district title with two games remaining. . .Mesa Vista, one of the top small school teams in northern New Mexico (the school is located in Ojo Caliente) has won 10 straight games and leads District 2A-5 by 2.5 games over McCurdy and Mora. Those two teams meet Saturday at McCurdy with the loser eliminated from the district race. . .Rehoboth Christian (14-8, 7-0) leads District 2A-1 by 2 games over Dulce. All 7 of Rehoboth's district wins have been by lopsided margins. In fact, they trounced Dulce by 35 points on Thur. night (64-29). . .Led by junior [player_tooltip player_id='2300000' first='Bryant' last='Scales'] (14.7 ppg, 6.5 rpg), No. 6 Legacy Academy (19-5, 8-0) appears headed to the District 2A-2 title (and an automatic berth in the state tournament) with games remaining against Jemez Valley and Menaul, both of whom are under .500. . .Mesilla Valley Christian (17-3, 5-0) would have a two-game lead in the District 2A-3 standings if they beat Capitan on Saturday. Lordsburg (10-13, 4-2) is the only district team with a realistic chance to catch MVC. Those two teams square off Feb. 21 in the regular season finale. Lordsburg is led by Zeke De La O (24.1 ppg), the leading scorer in Class 2A. The only other player averaging over 20 points per game is Hagerman's [player_tooltip player_id='2373606' first='Jevon' last='Aguilar']. . .The 16-team state tournament field is far from settled, especially in the bottom half. EIGHT teams have 10 or 11 victories, but only three or four at most will make it to the tournament. The final weeks ahead will be a heckuva ride as teams battle to stay alive.

The Buffaloes knocked off Logan on Feb. 7 in a non-district clash. Gateway Christian (17-7, 5-3) and Dora (9-14, 5-3) are battling for second place in the district. The Warriors lead To'hajiilee by 1.5 games in the district standings. Senior [player_tooltip player_id='1914013' first='Channing' last='James'] is averaging 22.8 points per game for Pine Hill.
