KEYS TO THE GAME

It didn't take long for host Pardeeville to establish control of its non-conference matchup with neighboring Poynette. The Bulldogs jumped out to a 20-10 lead behind some hot shooting from senior [player_tooltip player_id='2381725' first='Brenden' last='Krueger']. The lead grew to 39-21 several minutes later as sophomore [player_tooltip player_id='2510497' first='Devin' last='Jerome'] started to put up points on the scoreboard. By halftime, the undefeated Bulldogs had built a 48-27 advantage and it only got worse in the second half for Poynette. By the nine-minute mark of the second half, the Pardeeville lead had ballooned to more than 40 points, putting into effect the WIAA's mercy rule of a running clock. Pardeeville, which made 11 three-point baskets, moved to 12-0 with the win and avenged a WIAA Division 4 playoff loss to Poynette from a year ago. Poynette slipped to 4-11 and lost its seventh consecutive game as the Bulldogs' physical strength, size, shooting, experience and rebounding were simply too much to overcome.

STAR OF THE GAME

Jerome scored 30 points and did so by scoring at all three levels. He drilled two three-point baskets, made nine two-point goals on a combination of drives to the hoop and pull-up jump shots, and swished six-of-eight foul shots on the way to his career-high point total. Jerome played strong defense on the other end and also was active on the glass for the Bulldogs. On the season, he is averaging 11.2 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.6 assists.

Krueger is one of four senior starters in the Pardeeville lineup and he helped the Bulldogs get off to an impressive start against Poynette by drilling a couple of three-point shots and scoring 10 points in the first eight minutes of the contest. The lanky wing guard finished with 23 points as he connected on two additional triples in the second half and made all seven of his foul shots. Krueger leads the team with 29 made three-point baskets and is averaging 15.0 points per game for the Bulldogs.

Gard is a valuable piece to the starting rotation for the Bulldogs as he can play either guard spot, use his strength and skill to get to the basket, and make shots from outside the three-point arc. Gard started slowly against Poynette, but he was hit in the second half, making three shots outside the arc on the way to scoring 19 points. Gard is a four-year varsity performer for coach Chris Lindert so he brings plenty of experience and solid leadership to the Bulldogs' program. Gard is averaging 14.0 points, 5.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 2.0 steals per game.

Wells' strong play in the interior was a bright spot for Poynette as he was able to score 12 points thanks to his elevation off the ground and his solid footwork to avoid defenders. At 6-foot-3 and with good jumping ability and strength, Wells was a defendable option for the young Puma guards, who looked to their power forward on almost every possession. Wells battled on the glass on both ends of the court and also had some nice interior passes to teammate Bryce Frey.

THE BIG PICTURE

Pardeeville is one of five teams in the state with an unbeaten record along with Kettle Moraine (14-0), Bonduel (15-0), Royall (13-0) and North Crawford (12-0). The Bulldogs lead the Trailways West Conference by two games at the halfway point of the league schedule, and all five starters are averaging in double figures. Pardeeville scores well in transition, makes three-point baskets and plays strong man-to-man and zone defense. The Bulldogs have an experienced team with some depth and good overall size.

Poynette competes in a tough neighborhood as a member of the Capitol North Conference so notching a lot of victories in that league probably isn't in the cards for coach Cody Odegaard's squad this season. But there is hope for the future as the Pumas start just one senior and have two freshmen and three sophomores on the varsity roster. Freshman Connor Raymond (5-11) had a strong outing for Poynette against Pardeeville as the skilled backcourt prospect came off the bench to score 10 points.

BOXSCORE

Poynette (27-24 = 51)
Ripp 7, Johnson 4, Frey 8, Freimuth 9, Wells 12, Schwenn 0, Davidson 0, Hellendbrand 1, Raymond 10, Moll 0, Morton 0, Hartman 0.
