In Game Player Evals - Underclassmen

I caught 3 entertaining games this week. There was a 68-40 win for Ypsilanti-Lincoln against Saline. I also saw DeWitt picking up a 52-48 victory over Mason. Then there was a67-55 Waterford Mott win against South Lyon. There were some very intriguing underclassmen that caught my eye in these games that coaches should have on their radar.    Kurncz is a player to keep an eye on and he showed it in DeWitt's win against Mason. He proved to have some very deep range on his jumper in this game. Kurncz buried a well beyond the arc pull up triple. Later in the game, he hit a balanced catch and shoot 3. Kurncz also showed that he can attack the rim, with or without the ball, and make plays. He had a nice cut-catch-score and picked up an assist with a drive and a kick out to an open shooter.     Kronberg's Saline team was defeated by Ypsilanti Lincoln, but he still showed the game he's got and his terrific upside. He battled in this game, no matter what the score was, showing a ton of pride and heart. Kronberg was the offensive spark when the young team's offense needed a kick start. He showed the ability to sink jumpers from mid range and beyond the arc and he was able to play through contact and get to the free throw line.     This was my first time seeing or scouting Drake and I came away incredibly impressed. This young man can flat out play. He was crashing the boards early and often on both ends of the floor. Drake showed some real shiftiness for a young post player. He was comfortable and effective filling a wing in transition and had the body control on the move needed to work around the defense or defender and score at the rim. Drake had a highlight reel play when he was on the ground with the ball and threw a over the shoulder pass to a teammate that led to a bucket. He got it done defensively as well, picking up at least 3 blocks that I noted.     Robinson was outstanding in Waterford Mott's win against South Lyon. He can play the game at a very fast pace. And he does it with a lot of control for a sophomore. Robinson can lead a break off a turnover and turn it into a bucket. He also did a nice job of filling a wing and getting to the rim, giving the ball handler multiple options in transition. Robinson did such a nice job in the open floor, which made almost all of his looks at the rim come a very high percentage fashion.     Costigan is an exciting young talent for the Hornets. Saline was at it's best in the loss when Costigan was on the floor. The freshman was solid as the center man kicking out on an angle up to his 2 guards on the wing. The turnovers greatly decreased when he was playing that role in beating Lincoln's pressure. It's not often you can say that about players that have more left hand fingers than high school games. It's a great sign of things to come.
