There were a number of remarkable individual performances around the state in the opening week of action. Below we take a look at eight of the top Class 1A showings from the first seven days of action in a series that we plan to continue throughout the year, hopefully without too many repeats!

2025 PG [player_tooltip player_id='1484418' first='Mason' last='Bechen'] (North Linn) -- 46 points (17-28 FG, 4-10 3P, 8-11 FT), 5 rebounds, 3 assists, 2 steals [vs. Edgewood-Colesburg]

The best player in 1A basketball showed exactly why he's regarded as such during the opening week, culminating with this school record breaking performance with his 46 points. It's still very early in the season, of course, but Bechen is currently on a record breaking scoring pace. It'll be interesting to see how long the dominant three-level scoring guard can keep this up.

2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='2721446' first='Jacob' last='Litterer'] (Marquette Catholic) -- 35 points (15-22 FG, 0-2 3P, 5-11 FT), 12 rebounds (7 offensive), 3 assists, 1 steal [vs. Central City]

One of two Defenders to find themselves on this list in the opening week, Litterer has stepped into the starting lineup this season and been fantastic to start the year. His activity on the offensive glass was the key part of this outstanding performance, helping him rack up the points in a dominating win over Central City.

2026 PG [player_tooltip player_id='2731700' first='Chase' last='Haifley'] (Keota) -- 18 points (6-17 FG, 3-8 3P, 3-5 FT), 3 rebounds, 16 assists, 2 steals, 1 block [vs. Louisa-Muscatine]

A junior point guard who has stepped into a big-time role for the Eagles, Haifley was in complete control of the team's offensive attack in their win over Louisa-Muscatine, dishing out 16 helpers. That mark is the high point of any player in any class so far this season.

2025 PG [player_tooltip player_id='2721729' first='Owen' last='Anderson'] (Mormon Trail) -- 23 points (7-18 FG, 4-6 3P, 5-7 FT), 10 rebounds, 9 assists, 2 steals [vs. Murray]

Anderson came painfully close to posting a triple-double in the opening week against Murray, falling just one assist shy of the elusive feat. Nonetheless, he was dominant on both ends of the floor, showing the ability to score from all three levels, control the glass, and get his teammates involved.

2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1874772' first='Cal' last='Peterman'] (Bedford) -- 25 points (8-17 FG, 1-4 3P, 8-12 FT), 9 rebounds, 9 assists, 1 steal [vs. Sidney]

Another player who came really close to a triple-double in the opening week was Peterman, who fell a rebound and assist shy of the mark against Sidney. A strong, physical wing who can get to the rim just about as well as anyone in the class, he showcased improved playmaking off the dribble and vision. If he's able to be this type of facilitator throughout his senior year, Bedford could be a sleeper in the class.

2025 PF Alex Morgan (Southwest Valley) -- 27 points (11-23 FG, 0-1 3P, 5-8 FT), 21 rebounds (12 offensive), 2 assists, 3 steals [vs. Griswold]

Despite being listed at just 6-0, Morgan was truly dominant on the glass in a blowout win over Griswold, pulling down 21 boards, including an eye-popping 12 on the offensive end, which almost certainly helped contribute to his season-high 27 points.

2025 SF [player_tooltip player_id='1759939' first='Spencer' last='Roeder'] (Marquette Catholic) -- 25 points (9-17 FG, 4-8 3P, 3-5 FT), 17 rebounds, 6 assists, 1 steal [vs. North Scott]

There were some very impressive performances in Class 1A's opening week, but given the level of competition, this was the performance of the week. Marquette, last year's 1A runner-up, took down then-4A #10 North Scott, 90-83, in a highly entertaining game played up in the Wisconsin Dells on Saturday. Against a Class 4A school loaded with athleticism, length, and talent, Roeder was dominant, flashing his three-level scoring, dominating on the glass, and showcasing his ever-improving ball-handling, vision, and playmaking.

2025 PF [player_tooltip player_id='1951796' first='Caleb' last='Haack'] (Iowa Valley) -- 30 points (12-21 FG, 0-5 3P, 6-6 FT), 13 rebounds, 4 assists, 1 steal, 6 blocks [vs. Keota]

One of the most dominant two-way players in the class, Haack was great in the Tigers loss to Keota in the opening week, showcasing his ability to stuff the stat sheet in a variety of ways.
