With the school year underway in most parts of the New Mexico and the 2024-25 hoops season approaching, here are some of the players looking to join the 2,000/1,000 point clubs at some point this season:

2,000 POINT CLUB

[player_tooltip player_id='1687821' first='Jesus' last='Licon'], Highland: Arguably the state's top 3-point scorer, Licon has scored 1,639 points in just two season for the Hornets, the defending Class 4A champions. Incredibly, Licon scored 922 points in 2023-24 with 438 coming just on 3-pointers. Another season like that and Licon won't just surpass 2,000 points, he'll zoom past it and approach 2,500 career points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1176301' first='Latavious' last='Morris'], Atrisco Heritage: Morris right now is getting ready for football season (Atrisco Heritage hosts Rio Rancho Thur. night) but once basketball season starts, Morris will take dead aim at 2,000 career points. He goes into the 2024-25 campaign with 1,246 career points after scoring 723 points last season. So, Morris is more than capable of getting to the 2,000 point mountain.

1,000 POINT CLUB

[player_tooltip player_id='1687823' first='Thomas' last='Adams'], Sandia: Another hoops standout who's occupied with football at the moment. Besides being an outstanding LB, Adams is a fantastic hoops player as he showed last season when he averaged 15.9 points and scored 460 points to push his career total to 759 points. Adams was superb this summer on the AAU circuit. He should have a big season along with his Sandia teammates in two sports.

[player_tooltip player_id='2373606' first='Jevon' last='Aguilar'], Hagerman: Aguilar put himself in position to score 1,000 career points with an outstanding junior campaign in 2023-24, averaging 24.3 points per game, an increase of almost 20 points per game over his sophomore season in 2022-23. If there was an award for the state's Most Improved Player, Aguilar would have gotten serious consideration. He scored 608 points last season and is now just 268 points from 1,000 points.

[player_tooltip player_id='1687863' first='Kayle' last='Covington'], Lovington: Covington averaged in double figures in his first two seasons with the Wildcats, including 15.7 points in 2023-24. He goes into the season with 539 points but should reach 1,000 points towards the end of the new season. He should also surpass 500 rebounds and 100 steals for his career. If Covington finishes his career as a 1,000/500/100 player, he'll leave Lovington as a legend.

[player_tooltip player_id='1548691' first='Jackson' last='Fudge'], Roy/Mosquero: Fudge has been remarkably consistent in his first two years with the Blue. He scored 469 points and grabbed 172 rebounds as a junior in 2023-24 after scoring 405 points and grabbing 182 rebounds as a sophomore in 2022-23. His biggest improvement was in shooting the basketball (51 percent in 2023-24). He enters his senior season with 874 career points and should easily surpass 1,000 points by the midway point of the campaign.

[player_tooltip player_id='1687828' first='Abraham' last='Pena'], Hobbs: The Eagles could potentially be a very good basketball team in 2024-25 with Pena serving as the ringmaster. He goes into his senior season with 827 career points after averaging 16.7 ppg as a junior when he scored 467 points and shot 46 percent from the field. Pena will team with 7-foot-0 center [player_tooltip player_id='1524943' first='Parker' last='Henderson'] and others as the Eagles head into the new season with plenty of optimism.

[player_tooltip player_id='1717329' first='Mason' last='Wallin'], Logan: Just a junior, the 6-foot-4 Wallin has already scored 723 career points for the Longhorns. He scored over 500 points last season (16.4 ppg) and there's no reason to think he won't better that number in 2024-25. At this time next year, we'll probably be talking about Wallin as a potential 2,000 point career scorer.
