Continue ReadingIn my nine years of covering high school basketball in Georgia, Dom Eason might be the most explosive athlete I have seen. A truly gifted freak of a leaper, Eason is Georgia’s best in-game dunker and a true highlight factory. He gets tossed alley oops off the backboard in transition and will catch and finish with authority even if a defender is in the way. Eason caught three alley-oops, two off the backboard in Toombs’ 67-41 win at Athens Academy. Eason has elite next level athleticism. He has a nice looking three-point shot that is a weapon at the high school level and can improve with consistency. Adding to his off the dribble game could turn him into a star. JUCO, NAIA and D-II programs have all started to offer Eason with D-I schools quietly monitoring. Eason poured in 17 points, 1 rebound, 2 assists, 1 steal and 1 block in the rout. The longer Toombs plays in the state tournament, the more college programs will find out about this scintillating sleeper.
Jesus Quintero
Jesus Quintero
The three-point sniper is a crucial element to the Bulldogs’ success. When his shot is dropping, he can bust apart zones as he did against Athens Academy, drilling six threes including four in a 14-point first quarter. Aside from Jesus’ outside shooting, Quintero has a terrific synergy with Dom Eason. Jesus is a flashy passer that gets the ball to Eason off the backboard on alley oops. Throwing it as high as he can is always a good idea when it comes to getting the ball to Eason. Jesus, a baseball standout, went for 22 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal.
Demetrius Cutler
Demetrius Cutler
One of many big, strong athletes for Toombs County, Cutler made an impact with his effort on the glass and motor in transition. Demetrius collected 12 points, 15 rebounds, 3 assists, 3 steals and 1 block. He scored on a floater, a putback, a post-up, a mid-range jumper and a breakaway dunk.
Goudelock’s versatile offensive attack was on display against Toombs County, crafting his way to 11 points, 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals. Justen sank a three-pointer, scored on a left-handed drive, finished an And-1 putback, banked in a floater and found a hoop off a cut. Goudelock ends his careers as one of the most improved players in the state, losing over 40 pounds to transform himself into a three-level bucket getter and a reliable rebounder.
One of the greats in Athens Academy history, Williams’ final game saw him produce 9 points, 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Kymel scored a pair of hoops in transition and converted an And-1 drive. He is a physically impressive downhill guard that often is able to stuff the stat sheet on both ends of the floor. D-II programs have been in contact.
