2023-24 State Tournament: Breck wins 1st State Title
In this article:
The Breck Mustangs made it to state for the second time ever this year and tonight brought home their first ever boys basketball state title.
Breck and Lake City played an outstanding Class AA State Championship game won by the Mustangs. Lake City forced Breck into 37 percent shooting but Breck forced 20 turnovers out of Lake City and in the end, the Tigers paid the price for those mistakes.
DeAngleo Dungey, Mo Muhammad, and Hanif Muhammad did a great job with ball pressure and Daniel Freitag Daniel Freitag 6'1" | PG Breck | 2024 State #142 Nation MN was outstanding in the passing lanes (five steals). The defensive work from this group of guards wasn’t just strong, it was consistent throughout the game, and likely earned Breck the state title.
Lake City took a lot of punches but came back fighting. Hunter Lorenson Hunter Lorenson 6'0" | PG Lake City | 2024 State MN and Justin Wohlers had some big moments making tough shots to keep the Tigers and Rylee Fick finished possessions in half two as well. The problem was, Lake City couldn’t stop Daniel Freitag Daniel Freitag 6'1" | PG Breck | 2024 State #142 Nation MN from a game changing 33 points. Freitag’s late game three and basket attack finishes kept his team ahead and then his late game foul shots secured the state title.
MVP. Daniel Freitag Daniel Freitag 6'1" | PG Breck | 2024 State #142 Nation MN of Breck (sr). Daniel Freitag Daniel Freitag 6'1" | PG Breck | 2024 State #142 Nation MN had a game high 33 points completing 11 of 20 attempts and 8 of 11 foul shots. He sink three of seven triples including one late that was crucial to the win. Down the stretch Daniel had four scoring possessions that seemed to put the game away. He also totaled eight rebounds and five steals.
Underclassmen Standout. DeAngelo Dungey of Breck (soph). I cannot stress enough how good DeAngelo Dungey was defensively. In the box score you can see a steal and three blocks and those were of course important plays. But it was the ball pressure, deflections and constant attention he gave his man that made the difference. Dungey also hit a couple threes and two shots near the rim for 10 points but that was just icing on the cake. It was his defense that made the big impact.
Three More
Miles Newton Miles Newton 6'4" | SF Breck | 2025 State MN of Breck (jr). This was one of the best games I’ve seen Miles play. Defensively he was active in limiting his man and offensively he scored 18 points with four assists. Throw in the seven boards and it was an all around excellent performance from a guy that Breck needed to score off of Freitag and he did just that. Newton hit two threes and one was a big momentum builder.
Hunter Lorenson Hunter Lorenson 6'0" | PG Lake City | 2024 State MN of Lake City (sr). The tough as nails senior headed to Minnesota Crookston faced all kinds of pressure and managed to separate from Breck defenders to score 19 points on 8 of 17 attempts. Lake City turned the ball over far too much but rarely was it the point guard that had the errors. Lorenson took all of Breck’s defensive efforts and walked away with a strong performance in the loss.
Keegan Ryan Keegan Ryan 6'2" | SF Lake City | 2024 State MN of Lake City (sr). The future UND football player gave us a creative haircut and a lot more. He handled the ball a bit, grabbed 13 rebounds, made five of nine attempts for his 12 points and fight with Breck’s bigs all game. Ryan also had three blocks, three steals and three assists in the loss.
