UA Future Presidents’ Day Classic: Day 1 Recap
Memphis, TN. — For the past few years, the Presidents’ Day Classic presented by Under Armour has been a staple event to attend during Presidents’ Day Weekend and this years field is looking to be one of the best so far. Some of the top Under Armour programs from the 6th-8th grade gathered at P7 Sports Academy on Saturday for the first day of the three day event. With games going on all day, we take a look at five of the biggest storylines from the day…
Multiplier Basketball Making Noise Early in Memphis
Multiplier Basketball out of Indiana started play in Memphis with an impressive win over Team Curry (NC) in a thrilling back and forth game in the 8th Grade Curry Division that came down to the final possession. 2028 wing Don Bowling led the way for Multiplier with 26 points and essentially carried his team while getting support from forward Bishop Moore and guard Varschon Clark. The performance from Bowling helped his case for top individual performance of the day and once again proved he is a top wing from the midwest. Guard AJ Moorman Jr. stood out for Team Curry in the defeat as he showcased his skill-set at the lead guard position but also displayed an impressive scoring package. He led Curry with 14 points
Second Generation Talent Emerges From Sunshine State
Eddie Rios III is the son of Eddie Rios Jr., who is a former standout at the University of Miami and was a nationally ranked point guard in the Class of 2007. Now it is time for his son to make a name for himself and that is exactly what he did on Saturday. The Miami Knights guard displayed an advanced skill-set with the ball in his hands throughout their win against Martin Brothers. Rios got into the lane, connected on floaters, facilitated the ball well and defended throughout the game. Rios is showing that he is a name to know from the Class of 2030 as he has a tremendous feel for the game and a high understanding of basketball for only being a 6th grader.
Carsen Gary Leading The Way For Martin Brothers
This time last year Carsen Gary aka Mullet Mamba introduced himself as being a pivotal player for Martin Brothers and a year later, he has only improved. The 6’0” wing guard is a threat to score the basketball whenever the ball is in his hands and is a player that can score in bunches. He got most of his points against Middlesex Magic by driving to the rim but he can also connect on shots from the midrange and from behind the three point line. With Martin Brothers starting off pool play in a win against Middlesex Magic, they showed that they came to Memphis to make a statement while Gary also showed that no one person might not bevas important to his team as he is.
Game Of The Day Goes To Gateway in Overtime
Court 1 during the 3:50 slate was the place to be as Gateway Knights and DC Premier went at it as the game finished with multiple lead changes in the final few minutes. Gateway Knights walked away as the winner in overtime thanks to the performance from Ridge Janes. Janes was nearly unstoppable for Gateway as he was a player that scored in a variety of ways for his team but did most of his damage from behind the arc. His running mate at the lead guard position was Tucker Reutzel who ran the show for Gateway. For DC Premier, Peyton Pullen displayed an impressive skill-set at the lead guard position. When Premier needed anything offensively, Pullen found himself stepping up most of the time with either a timely bucket or an impressive pass for an assist. At the wing position, Donovan Ford showed impressive size and a pure jumper in which he connected on quite a few mid range jumpers.
Texas Summitt Showcasing Depth of Southwest Talent
The state of Texas is known for producing some of the top basketball players in the United States and has a deep pool of talent all throughout the state. Some of that talent from the Class of 2028 is a part of the Texas Summitt program and that was shown on Saturday. Texas Summitt has been one of the stronger programs on the UA Future Circuit the past few years and if yesterday proved anything, their 8th grade team will continue that trend. In a blowout win over Macon Mavs, they had a number of guys stand out. Guard Jeremiah Colbert led with 15 points while scoring the ball in a variety of ways. Jonathan Rodriguez runs the show for Summitt at the point guard position while Kedrid Smith is one of the anchors in the low post. Summitt also got contributions from Cayden Perry and Tristan Ray. Summitt showed that they could be one of the deeper teams in Memphis this weekend.
