Coastal Conference Player of the Year: Derrick Benbow Jr Derrick Benbow Jr 6'3" | CG White Oak | 2024 State NC
Derrick Benbow Jr Derrick Benbow Jr 6'3" | CG White Oak | 2024 State NC takes home this year’s Coastal Conference Player of the Year Award. Benbow took home roughly 64 percent of the vote while the three other finalists battled things out below him in the double-figure percentage range. 2nd place finished with roughly 16% of the vote while there was a tie for third place with both taking home 10 percent of the votes. Benbow was a new addition to the White Oak High backcourt as they continued to keep things on the up and up this season. He led the way with 15.8 PPG on 50 percent shooting from the field as well as a team-high 2.4 SPG as the Vikings finished 19-5 and second in the Coastal Conference at 8-2. The conference tournament should be an intriguing one as they look to avenge losses to Swansboro High.
Benbow is a strong-framed guard prospect who’s shown he can operate off the bounce and get to his spots in the mid-range and painted area. He also averaged 4.1 RPG and 2.1 APG to go along with his 15.8 PPG and 2.4 SPG. He’s shown he can rebound in bunches when needed too, recording a double-double back on Jan. 3 with 20 points and 10 rebounds against East Carteret High. White Oak was 7-2 this season in games where Benbow record at least 20 points. He knows how to attack the bucket with efficiency as he shot 60.3 percent from the floor in the three contests (all victories) he put up a season-high 22 points. As he continues to improve his game and develop his perimeter shot, he’s a name to keep an eye on a few years down the road on the college circuit.
