On Saturday we made the trek up to Cardinal Newman on a soggy wet rainy night to catch this Division 2 quarterfinal match-up between 2 seed Cardinal Newman 26-4, 11-1, from the North Bay Oak League and the visitors 10 seed St.Patrick-St.Vincent 19-11, 7-3 of the Tri County Rock League. A 10 seed knocking off a 2 seed at home at first looks like an upset, not really. Newman gave their best effort, but in the end too much size and athleticism led to a 42-37 victory on the road for St. Pats. The Standouts were
McNeal standing around 6’7 has guard qualities. He has the skill set to rebound and take off with dribble, using speed and athleticism, a little off balance, he’s hard to contain when he does that, but gets the job done. Working the post area he has the muscle, and hops to go over defenders for points in the paint, and rebounds.
Diego Flores Gonzalez
Diego Flores Gonzalez
It was our first look at Gonzalez. He was good from the guard position, he brought the all up on occasion, sometimes pushing it fast, he did using his body on the drive into the paint, but mostly he shot the ball well from the corners knocking 3’s throughout the game to keep his team in the hunt. He finished as the games leading scorer with 19pts. 2-3’s
Walker has a calm approach doesn’t get rattled. He can work from both guard positions, he has good stamina played most of the game. He does a good job up top when called to run point settling the team in half-court, and late into the games where he’ll look to be aggressive. He hit a couple of big shots before the half, a 3ptr, and down the stretch including a floater to secure the win. 13pts
Mahdi Camara
Mahdi Camara
Standing 6’1 with good foot work, movement, and a solid body Camara served as the big man on Newman. He didn’t back down making the bigger more athletic players on St. Pat’s work on both ends of the court. He didn’t mind the banging getting his shot up over taller players. He made hustle plays, often the first one to hit the floor, for loose balls to save, and earn extra possessions.
Jones is on full go when he gets the ball in the back court. The muscular point guard has quality handles to attack and challenge defenders in the paint, he can handle the contact. He had multiple dribble drive pull-up jumpers in the paint, and short corners for 2 points. He’s a physical on ball defender, hard to get around at times.
The Freshman showed good composure in this game, and running this team from the point guard position. He’s a quality ball handler, handles back court pressure, he sees the whole court for long passes up in transition, and around the perimeter. He had multiple drives going to his left or right on the initial attack. He had good drives across the lane to find shooters. He drives, plants, plays off two feet, he hit a couple of paint jumpers.
Highlights
Trotter gets most of his work done in the post area. He’ll get his fair share of rebounds going after missed shots, and looking for put back points. He’ll turn, and take it up strong when he gets it on the low block, he spent time working from the high post. At 6’4 he has the strength to defend inside the paint.
