Continue ReadingWith the 2023-24 season over for nearly all high school players in the Borderland area, it now feels appropriate to rank and file the top players I have scouted. The players on this list are the best seniors from the class of 2024 from El Paso, Las Cruces, and Alamogordo, also known as the Borderland.
10: Atticus Ada
10: Atticus Ada
Injuries slowed down what should have been a special senior season. Nevertheless, Ada deserves to be recognized for his skill and his ability to score with the best of them when he is healthy. Furthermore, I’ve had multiple AAU coaches advocate for his talent outside of the high school system. With his length and mid-range scoring, I think he could blossom into a solid college level player. When healthy, he is high level scorer who can fill it up with the best of them on the perimeter.
9: Nick Sapien
9: Nick Sapien
A solid 2-guard who brings it on both ends. Really fits into the prototypical mold of what you would want out of a shooting guard: good off-ball movement, catch-and-shoot ability, and perimeter scoring. He had a stellar senior season, leading Pebble Hills in scoring but falling just short of the bi-district playoffs. At the college level, I see him more as a point guard due to his size, but he is a good enough ball handler to fill that role.
8: Aiden Marquez
8: Aiden Marquez
The top player on the top 6A team in El Paso. Marquez like his team was consistent all year long, providing interior scoring, rebounding, and rim protection for the Trail Blazers. The senior big man led Americas in points and blocks and was second on the team in rebounds and assists. More importantly, he was their most dependable scorer, shooting 54 percent from the floor.
7: Lucas Brandon
7: Lucas Brandon
A do it all wing with size and length. Brandon was a pivotal player in Eastlake’s best season in years. The Falcons found their way into the playoffs with some crucial late season wins. It’s hard to imagine them getting over the hump without Brandon. He was second on the team in points, rebounds, assists, and blocks. He’s at his best when his mid-range jumper is falling but I believe he has the potential to be an effective three level scorer as a collegiate player.
6: Ethan Martinez
6: Ethan Martinez
A true floor general and pass first player. Martinez was the best player on a top three team in El Paso. His best attributes do not show up in the stat sheet even though he fills the stat sheet for the Cougars. Martinez is great at controlling the pace and never gets sped up by defenders. He led the team in points and assists; more impressively, he was second on the team in rebounds despite being the smallest player on the floor.
5: Yeh-Nhi Wilson Yeh-Nhi Wilson 6'3" | CG Organ Mountain | 2024 State NM
5: Yeh-Nhi Wilson Yeh-Nhi Wilson 6'3" | CG Organ Mountain | 2024 State NM
This kid is a pure athlete with elite leaping ability and even better defensive attributes. Wilson was one of three-star players on the best team in Las Cruces. There are few players who can match his defensive impact and even less who can match his athletic ability. Additionally, he’s a great playmaker who can make just about any pass out in open space. I believe Wilson will be a great addition to any college program that offers him because of those elite playmaking traits and defensive upside.
4: Aaron Vargas Aaron Vargas 6'5" | SF Franklin | 2024 TX
4: Aaron Vargas Aaron Vargas 6'5" | SF Franklin | 2024 TX
The best player on a 20-win playoff team with encouraging upside that should translate to the college level. Vargas lines up as a big but plays like a wing. Moreover, he is more comfortable scoring from the perimeter. The senior big man is one of the best pure shooters in the Borderland. He can spot up, take and make off the dribble, or hit movement threes. It’s hard to see Eastlake making the playoffs let alone winning 20 games this season without him.
3: Cam Gulley
3: Cam Gulley
One of the true elite players in the Borderland, regardless of classification or position. Gulley led Andress to multiple playoff wins and 5A area title as their top player. As for his game, he is the best 3-point shooter I’ve scouted these past four months. He has range that extends comfortably to 22-feet and beyond and he shoots from a solid base with little to no mechanical issues. Gulley could easily be a prolific scorer but chooses to be a pass first player and finds his opportunities through the flow of the offense.
2: Brandon Kehres Brandon Kehres 6'5" | PF Organ Mountain | 2024 State NM
2: Brandon Kehres Brandon Kehres 6'5" | PF Organ Mountain | 2024 State NM
One of the top prospects in New Mexico and among the elite players in the Borderland region. Kehres is a physically dominant player with elite athletic traits for his position. Very few Bigs can match his physicality nor can they slow down his low post scoring. More impressively, he’s a true two-way player who can be equally disruptive on the defensive end. Organ Mountain is one of the best teams in New Mexico and a lot of it has to do with Kehres.
1: Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6'4" | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX
1: Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6'4" | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX
The best player on one of the best teams in the state of Texas; enough said. Hymes is the best two-way player in the Borderland with a college ready frame. I believe he is the most college ready prospect in the class of 2024. Defensively, he is a menace who can guard all positions at the high school level. He has the lateral quickness to guard guards and the height and strength to defend forwards and centers. Hymes could easily be a 20 point per game type of offensive player, but he rarely has to plays enough minutes because Chapin has been so dominant.
