That event? The Bethune-Bowman MLK Showcase. In addition to the home court of the 1A Mohawks, the event also utilized other gyms at 1A North HS, 2A Lake Marion HS, and 3A Orangeburg-Wilkinson HS.
We at Prep Hoops also were on hand for Saturday’s festivities. Without further adieu, here is a recap of the two boys’ contests that took place at Bethune-Bowman.
Dreher vs. Ridgeland-Hardeeville
Two girls contests had taken place before the first boys’ game of the day at Bethune-Bowman took place. It featured a 3A school from the Midlands and a 2A team from the Lowcountry .
The Blue Devils are on their way to having an improved season over 2022-23. That team won nine games. This year’s rendition has already reeled off seven victories – two of those losses were to North Carolina opponents and two of those were to 4A A.C. Flora.
Meanwhile, it has been another season – so far – of hard luck for Ridgeland-Hardeeville. The Jaguars only victories this season have come against Battery Creek, Allendale-Fairfax and Airport.
The first boys’ win of the day’s play at Bethune-Bowman would by claimed by Dreher. The Blue Devils earned a 65-45 win over the Jaguars.
Quarter-By-Quarter
If one wanted up-tempo basketball, Dreher vs. Ridgeland-Hardeeville was the game for you. The up-tempo style of play seemed to favor the Blue Devils as they jumped out to an early 8-2 advantage. As things began to slow down, the Jaguars inched closer and closer to Dreher. With one in the books, the Blue Devils’ lead was 14-7.
With important production off the bench for Dreher, they managed to grow its lead into the double digits. As halftime commenced, the Blue Devils’ advantage over Ridgeland-Hardeeville would be 30-16.
The third quarter would prove to be the most evenly contest stanza of the game up to that point. But the Jaguars needed a period similar to what Dreher had in the first half. With three in the books, it was 48-32 in the Blue Devils’ favor.
At this point, it was a matter of how big the Dreher victory would be – not if the Blue Devils would be victorious. With the game all but settled, a few highlight plays were displayed by both teams, but where it mattered was on the scoreboard – which read that Dreher came out on top.

While still a formidable opponent, the 2A Warriors are having a somewhat down season from the 26 wins they posted in 2022-23. Andrew Jackson Academy did recently snap a three-game losing streak with a 63-47 victory over a region foe in Calhoun Academy.

Quarter-By-Quarter
Bethune-Bowman’s boys hoped to put a fitting bookend on the day’s play following the Bethune-Bowman girls win over Hunter-Kinard-Tyler. The Mohawks’ effort to do just that was off to a promising start as they built a 14-9 lead over the Warriors.
That Mohawks lead then grew into the double digits as the second quarter continued to elapse. As both teams went into their respective locker rooms to discuss second half strategy, it was Bethune-Bowman 35 and Andrew Jackson Academy 23.
If nothing else was clear in the third quarter, one thing was – the rout was on. And it was a rout that could be colored in the Bethune-Bowman colors. Eight minutes remained – and the Mohawks were sitting pretty with a 39-point edge.
Bethune-Bowman had plenty of fans on hand to watch their Mohawks play in the nightcap of the MLK Showcase. Those fans had plenty to cheer about from the opening tip to the final buzzer as evidenced by the blowout victory for the Mohawks.
