It’s full of perennial D1 title contenders such as Champlain Valley Union H.S., Rice Memorial H.S., St. Johnsbury Academy, and other top teams within the state. So, let’s take a little look at last night’s top performers in the Metro!
Abdi Sharif, 6’4 G – Rice Memorial H.S. Class of 2025
Sharif has been on a tear lately and it’s no surprise. He’s become an integral scorer to this Green Knights team who graduated a ton of scoring last year, including Abdi’s older brother, Sharif, a 1k scorer. While Abdi’s primary skills lie in relentless defensive work, rebounding and facilitating, he’s taken on a bigger scoring role this year. Last night, he led Rice with 21 points off of constant rim attacks and FTs. Keep watch.
Tyler Bergmans Tyler Bergmans 6'2" | SG South Burlington | 2024 State New E , 6’3 G – South Burlington H.S. Class of 2024
SB might be surprising some followers this year, but they’ve got a do-it-all stud in Bergmans who contributes so much to their winning cause. 8-2 so far, Tyler has consistently been their leading scorer and rebounder. He too plays bully ball around the rim, using physical drives and a well-timed second jump to finish, collect FTs, and reel in boards. Last night, TB put together 25 points in a strong win against St. Johnsbury. They keep reeling off Ws.
Harry Geng Harry Geng 6'1" | PG St Johnsbury Academy | 2024 State New E , 6’2 G – St. Johnsbury Academy Class of 2024
If you’re looking for a bucket, I found one. Geng can flat out find the nylon, whether it’s in the paint, the mid-range, or from deep. The athletic southpaw has been leading this Hilltopper team and has kept them afloat in tough games as key guy 6’5 Rex Hauser Rex Hauser 6'5" | SF St. Johnsbury Academy | 2025 State New E deals with injury. St. J took Rice to the final buzzer last week in a close L, then toppled MMU. Harry posted 23 points against a long and agile South Burlington squad, and I don’t see him slowing down any time soon.
Kerrick Medose, 6’0 G – St. Johnsbury Academy Class of 2025
Medose has proven over the last few games that he can put the ball in the hole. Kerrick is typically slotted as an organizer of the offense and a 3rd-4th option who finds his scoring in the flow of the game. Yet with Hauser out, he’s stepped-up big time. Kerrick’s finding his offense still very much in the flow of the game, but he’s looked for his shot more from 3-point land and at the cup. If he maintains this scoring output when Hauser returns, St. J will have a 3-headed monster.
Kyle Eaton Kyle Eaton 5'9" | PG Champlain Valley Union | 2024 New E , 5’9 G – Champlain Valley Union H.S. Class of 2024
After running the gauntlet against Rice’s fullcourt denial defense and getting off 14 points on a mere handful of shots, Eaton went down to Brattleboro and got loose. In a blowout win where CVU opened the game on an 18-0 run and finished the first frame 31-2, Eaton led the charge. Kyle had 23 points, knocking down treys and finding little shots around the short-range. A natural bucket on the ball and off.
Zach Davis, 6’5 F – Colchester H.S. Class of 2024
The baseball mound is the Bryant-commits primary arena of excellence, but Davis is pretty nice on the hardwood too. An inside/out forward with a sweet stroke, Zach got off for 22 points in a close win against Essex. Davis is a natural pick and pop option and an intuitive floor spacer, opening up the floor for PG Freddie Bacon to cut up defenses and find kicks on his paint punctures. A dynamic duo, those two.
Cooper McCurley, 5’11 G – Essex H.S. Class of 2026
Essex is facing a tough year so far after having graduated numerous seniors from a solid group last year, but it’s not for lack of effort or facilitation. McCurley’s an instinctual orchestrator, able to run the offense to a tee and create looks for others off of his slashes and in the pnr. Cooper was able to find the stroke, putting up a clean 15 points in a nail-biter against Colchester. A true floor general and spirited competitor, EHS won’t go down easily with him at the helm.
Will Hughes, 5’11 G – BFA St. Albans Class of 2024
Hands down one of the toughest competitors around, Hughes is full of willpower and two-way fervor. A physical guard who attacks the paint, Will posted a 21-point outing against a long and athletic Rice team. He found his scoring off of tough takes and savvy footwork in the second layer, getting to the rim and finishing in the short-range. BFA is hanging around the .500 mark and Will is the catalyst.
Mohamed Abdirahman, 5’9 G – Burlington H.S. Class of 2027
2027 alert! BHS has three 2027 guards that ought to be on your radar and Mo is certainly one of those guys. Mo led BHS in scoring with 16 points against MMU, leading the charge in a balanced attack that had four BHS players in double figures. Abdirahman’s athleticism is quickly obvious, and his work ethic in the fullcourt press causes major chaos. This high-tempo style fits Mo perfectly with his crafty finishing and agile defense.
