These are all names to keep a close watch on this summer and especially into High School next year. Here’s a look at some of the best freshman point guards/ combo guards in Arkansas. This list is in alphabetical order and is not a ranking.
Kamryn Alexander Kamryn Alexander 5'11" | PG Maumelle | 2027 State AR
Kamryn Alexander Kamryn Alexander 5'11" | PG Maumelle | 2027 State AR
Starting with PG Kamryn Alexander Kamryn Alexander 5’11” | PG Maumelle | 2027 State AR . Alexander is a scoring threat from all three levels. He is quick and decisive with the ball. If he is having a hot night it is going to be a long night for whoever is guarding him. Getting to the rim and having a crafty finish is easy for Alexander, but he also is great at pulling up off the dribble. Alexander could improve on creating for his teammates. Just looking at his ability to create a shot and score, Alexander has a bright future ahead of him.
If the future of basketball is tall PGs who can do a little of everything, then Kellen Cash Kellen Cash 6’5″ | SF Prairie Grove | 2027 State AR is a perfect fit. At 6’5 Cash might seem like an unnatural point guard, but that could not be any more wrong. Cash has a natural feel for the game that few freshmen have. He plays smooth and under control whether he’s in a pick and roll or playing iso. He loves to push the pace and play in transition. Around the rim, he has great touch but lives on his midrange. Has a great pull-up from midrange and also loves spinning jumpers back to his right. Also is very comfortable pulling up from deep if his defender goes under screens.
Dmareon Eason
Dmareon Eason
Every team needs a true point guard that can control the team. That is Dmareon Eason. Eason is what every coach dreams of when looking for someone to run your offense. He never looks to force anything that isn’t there but is aggressive enough where the defense can’t slack off. He truly runs the offense. On defense he defends full court constantly causing chaos and getting his hand on the ball. Eason is a leader on offense and defense.
Probably the best overall player on this list, Koa Rockwell Koa Rockwell 6’0″ | CG Pulaski Academy | 2027 State AR is a 6’1 combo guard. Offensively he is someone you can count on to not be a ball stopper. He looks to attack and plays as a pass-first and score second type of player. Sometimes can be a little too passive, but this is normal for a freshman getting varsity minutes. Even though he is pass first, Eason is good at not dribbling himself into trouble. When attacking the basket he is strong and under control, even though his first step is not the quickest. Off the ball he is confident at catching and shooting when his defender helps. Defensively his wing span gives him great length that allows him to be disruptive and make plays.
Dj Young
Dj Young
Confidence echos out of DJ Young when he plays. The first thing you notice when watching him is his passing. Passing with either his left or right hand he gets the ball to places no one else can see is open. His wiry frame allows him to get to the basket and his quick first step makes him hard to keep in front. Though he is great with the ball, he is also a great 3pt shooter off ball. His shot is smooth and there is no hesitation when he is open. On defense he is a little risky. If there is an opportunity to steal the ball from behind he is going for it. Although it does not always pay off Eason is smart about when to do it or not do it.
