The Briarcrest Saints defeated Chicago Prep, 62-61, in overtime. Memphis Home Education Association defeated Brentwood Academy, 69-62.
Here are the top performers from both games:
Cooper Haynes, Briarcrest: Haynes led the Saints with 25 points in the win. The 6-foot-1 guard made only 3 3-pointers in the contest, but did a solid job of driving into the lane and drawing contact. He made the best of his opportunity from the free throw line, going 10 for 11. With his team down one in overtime, Haynes caught the ball near the baseline, drove into the lane head first before using his strong left hand to go up and make the game-winning basket. When Briarcrest needed a score, Haynes delivered.
Fred Smith, Briarcrest: The sophomore forward did a great job of posting up on the block. Smith was able to get easy scores out of it. He also rebounded the ball well. In the fourth quarter when the Saints were down 45-42 with 4:05 left, Smith converted on a 3-point play to tie the game. Outside of Haynes, Smith was the only other bright spot for the offense.
Caleb Thomas, MHEA: Thomas had one of his best offensive performances of the season Friday night against Brentwood Academy. He was making shots from the perimeter and finishing strong at the rim. Thomas didn’t force any of his shots. He took what the defense gave him. Thomas led his team with 21 points.
Robert Dawkins, MHEA: Dawkins was big for his team on the boards Friday night. At 6-5, Dawkins is physical and relentless in the post. The Brentwood Academy Eagles had a difficult time keeping him off the glass. Dawkins had 12 points and seemed to want each basketball that came off the rim.
Andrew Thomas, MHEA: Thomas was big in the second half for his team. Like Dawkins, Thomas was a hand full in the post, getting important rebounds and putbacks. The senior forward did a great job of drawing contact. Thomas finished with 16 points and went 10 for 11 from the free throw line.
Tyler Tanner, Brentwood Academy: The Eagles’ best player did his part in the loss. Tanner made some tough shots, got into the paint anytime he wanted to, and knocked down shots from the perimeter. He finished with a game-high 29 points.
Honorable mention
Jerome Davis, Brentwood Academy: Davis is a good catch-and-shoot wing. He does a great job of running hard off screens to get open. Davis finished the game with 9 points.
