Get used to hearing the name Brandon Hymes Brandon Hymes 6’4″ | SG El Paso Chapin | 2024 State TX because he is a perennial weekly standout performer. The senior guard opened the week with a dominant 18-point performance against Mountain View. Hymes, who is regarded as the best defensive player in El Paso, smothered the Lobos in Chapin’s full court press. As a result of four steals, Hymes lived at rim, scoring all nine of his field goals in the paint. Three days later, he followed up with another double-digit scoring effort as the Huskies cruised past Bel Air 70-30. Chapin has won 58 straight games against El Paso high schools and Hymes has a lot to do with that.
Aiden Marquez
Aiden Marquez
In a Saturday afternoon meeting against one of the best teams in the district, Aiden Marquez came up big for the Trail Blazers. Americas pulled out a nail-biting 29-26 win over Eastwood, in what was largely a bitterly contested defensive battle. The senior big man stuffed the stat sheet with 14-points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals, and 2 blocks. Anytime Eastwood went on a run, tied the game, or took the lead, Marquez came right back at them. He sealed the game late with a clutch free throw to put Americas up by three before Eastwood turned the ball over on the final play. Americas currently stands at 14-1 on the season and is undefeated in district play.
Jazhiel Herrera
Jazhiel Herrera
Since coming into the starting lineup for the Franklin Cougars this season, Jazhiel Herrera has not disappointed. This past Wednesday, the junior shooting guard lit up Montwood with 17-points on 7-for-10 shooting from the floor and 9 rebounds. On the season, Herrera is shooting 53 percent from the field, and he likes the long ball. Over his last seven games, he is shooting a staggering 42.8 percent from three.
Azaiah Thompson
Azaiah Thompson
Azaiah Thompson is another Borderland prospect fans need to familiarize themselves with. In a Tuesday night home game against Tornillo, the junior small forward was dominant posting a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double. More impressively, Thompson was all over the offensive glass recording 5 offensive rebounds. With a third of the regular season concluded, the Ysleta wing is on track to receive All-City honors. He is averaging just a shade under 20 points per game to go along with 7 rebounds per game.
Julian Pacheco
Julian Pacheco
It’s hard to end a week and not talk about multiple players from Chapin, in specific, multiple guards from the Rodney Lewis program. Junior guard Julian Pacheco was efficient and effective as the Huskies went 2-0 this week. He had 12 and 14 points against Mountain View and Bel Air respectively, playing about as clean of a game as you can from the guard position. Whether it be on offense or defense, he seemed to always be in the right place at the right time. Pacheco either finds himself assisting or nailing open threes on offense or racking up steals and deflections defensively.
