A number of girls and boys converged on the home of the 1A Hawks for this year’s Hawk Invitational. Unlike the girls portion of the tournament, the boys featured a more conventional bracket format with eight teams taking part.
We at Prep Hoops were on hand for the proceedings the first day of the tournament. There were also a number of noteworthy performances put forth by those that were on hand. Without further adieu, we recognize a few of those showings.
Donnell Goodwin

Collectively, the Tigers had a rough start to this year’s Blackville-Hilda Hawk Invitational. Swansea was defeated in its first contest of this year’s event by a final of 80-47 at the hands of 2A Barnwell, but Goodwin did everything he could to provide a spark to Swansea’s offense. He put 27 points on the board which actually led all scorers for the game despite the losing Tigers effort. Goodwin will display an ability to put a team on his back – even after Barnwell jumped out to a huge lead, he consistently put points on the board to give his team a semblance of a chance. Scoring at all three levels, leadership qualities, veteran instincts and quickness to the basket are all hallmarks to his game.
When looking to put the 2A Warhorses of Barnwell in the loss column, part of that game plan involves how to keep the team’s star sophomore in check. Swansea did not have many answers on Wednesday morning at the Blackville-Hilda Hawk Invitational. With an 18-point performance, Scofield keyed an offensive clinic that powered the Warhorses to the first boys’ victory of this year’s tournament. The final score of that game was 80-47. Scofield is listed at 6-foot-3 – one of the tallest players on the team. He also understands the art of attacking the rim and coming through with strong finishes.
Deonte Holman

The second boys game of the day at Blackville-Hilda was certainly more entertaining than the first. One reason for that was because of all the big plays made by 1A Williston-Elko’s star senior. In a 65-51 victory over its region rival Ridge Spring-Monetta, Holman placed 21 points on the board. Standing at 6-foot-6, Holman fuses together height with athleticism along with plenty of length. All are worthwhile attributes to possess when looking to score baskets near the rim in addition to rebounding. Holman’s athletic plate is full between basketball and playing football during the early and middle portions of the fall semester.
Devin Geronomi

Those that watched Geronomi score early in 5A White Knoll’s 75-56 victory over Andrew Jackson Academy on Wednesday could tell he was poised for another big game. That he was as his 21 points were a big difference in getting his Timberwolves into the win column. Toughness is something he possesses plenty of – he took a hard foul at one point in the contest and managed to shake it off as if it was nothing. That toughness, more than likely, is an element of the other sport he plays which is football. On the gridiron, Geronomi thrives as a strong safety and cornerback.
Kavien Hall

There were many teams at this year’s Blackville-Hilda Hawk Invitational that put forth dominant performances. That of the 1A Allendale-Fairfax boys team may have been the most emphatic. Hall notched 24 points to lead his Tigers over the host Hawks to a 95-36 victory. One of the reasons why he was so effective was because of the proficiency he displayed from behind the 3-point arc. Allendale-Fairfax made eight from downtown. Hall was responsible for five of those triples. The six-foot standout can also play productive time as a wing. His athletic career also includes competing in track and field events.
