Defending 2A State Champs Fort Wayne Blackhawk loses opening game
The defending Class 2A State champions, Fort Wayne Blackhawk, officially got their season underway as they traveled down the road to face Fort Wayne North, who also got their season underway as well. It was not a great opening night for the reigning 2A champs as they fell to the Legends 71-63. Per reports, it looked as though this game was always near a 10-point gap in favor of Fort Wayne North throughout. Javion Davenport Javion Davenport 5'11" | PG Northside Ft. Wayne | 2024 IN led Fort Wayne North with 20 point while Jaxson Fugate Jaxson Fugate 6'5" | SF Fort Wayne North Side | 2024 State IN and Eugene Young Jr each added 19. Blackhawk was led by 2025 standout Kellen Pickett Kellen Pickett 6'9" | PF Blackhawk Christian | 2025 State #108 Nation IN with a game-high 22 points. North will be looking to continue to build this momentum as they travel to Dekalb on Friday while Blackhawk will be looking for a bounce-back win at New Haven on Friday, as well.
Taray Howell Taray Howell 5'8" | PG Evansville Bosse | 2024 State IN join 1,000 point club
Moving down South, we have one of first players this season join the impressive 1,000 point club. Down in Evansville Bosse, senior lead guard Taray Howell Taray Howell 5'8" | PG Evansville Bosse | 2024 State IN scored his 1,000th career point. This came after he scored a team-high 15 points in the loss vs. Jasper last night. Howell is one of the best pure scorers in the state and can do it at many levels on the floor. He has elite quick speed on the ball that allows him to burst past defenders and push the pace whenever he wants to. He and Bulldogs will look for a bounce-back win over a tough Cathedral team at Sneakers For Santa on Saturday.
Franklin upsets Center Grove in OT
In perhaps the biggest game of the night saw easily the biggest upset, as well. In overtime, the Franklin Grizzly Cubs were able to knockoff No. 3 Center Grove 65-64. Per reports, it looked to be an extremely tight game throughout that almost saw Center Grove squeak out with a win with Dylan Meador Dylan Meador 5'11" | PG Center Grove | 2024 State IN coming up with the lose ball off a Joey Schmitz Joey Schmitz 6'2" | PG Center Grove | 2024 State IN missed free throw but could not get the shot to fall before time has expired. In OT, Franklin’s Wyatt Nickleson Wyatt Nickleson 5'11" | PG Franklin Community | 2024 IN made two go ahead free throws with about 10 seconds left to give the Flashers the close win. Eastern Kentucky signee Micah Davis Micah Davis 6'0" | PG Franklin | 2024 State #184 Nation IN and Grant Hunter each had a game-high 18 points while Center Grove was led by Jalen Bundy Jalen Bundy 5'11" | PG Center Grove | 2024 State IN with 16 points. Both teams get back in action this weekend with Franklin hosting Brownsburg on Friday while Center Grove will face Bloomington North on Friday
