Another set of eyes
Sophomore forward Fred Smith is crucial to Briarcrest’s success this season. Whether it’s Connor Mancell, Cooper Haynes, or Greg Spight at the point guard spot, Smith is the other set of eyes the Saints’ offense needs because of his great court vision. He’s valuable at all positions on the floor because of his ability to shoot, pass, and post up on the block.
In Saturday’s win over Raleigh-Egypt at Memphis University School, Smith’s presence was felt in the fourth quarter. It was a one possession contest early in the fourth quarter after the Pharoahs’ senior wing Cassie Bullard made a deep 3. After that, senior Braden Bryan scored on back-to-back possessions before Mancell scored a layup of his own.
Bryan’s scores came from Smith initiating the offense and seeing where the advantages were on the floor. Bryan, who’s 6-4, cashed in his easy scores in the paint each time Smith found him. The 6-6 forward had a layup of his own to make it 54-44.
”I’m just a natural distributor,” said Smith, who, along with Bryan, finished with 14 points. “When I see my teammates open, I know I have shooters all around me. If I’m getting doubled or tripled team in the paint, I know I can get it off to them. Nine times out of 10, I know they’re going to knock it down.”
Haynes finished the game with 12 points. Mancell added 10.
