Between our traditional pre-Thanksgiving tip-off on Tuesday and Wednesday to a nearly full Saturday slate most teams around the state have started their respective seasons. With that comes some early season movement in the polls. We here at Prep Hoops Indiana do things a little differently, and in our opinion better, than most that do polls. First, we are transparent and actually provide some reasoning and context. Secondly, we don’t overreact to November basketball games. Barring something unforeseen there need not be major changes this time of year. Finally, we use some common sense when looking at results. For example, if the #10 team in the state loses to the #3 team in the state by 2 points why should the #10 team fall out of the rankings? That result, to us, is more impressive than say the #9 team in the state beating some low-level team by 17 points. However, let’s digress and get to the rankings! Here is where we stand after Week One.
Class 1A – Top 10
Team | Record | Previous Ranking |
1. Indianapolis Lutheran | 0-0 | #1 |
2. Evansville Christian | 2-0 | #2 |
3. Orleans | 1-0 | #3 |
4. Christian Academy | 1-0 | #4 |
5. Bethesda Christian | 1-0 | #5 |
6. Morgan Township | 1-0 | #6 |
7. Greenwood Christian | 2-0 | #8 |
8. Tindley | 1-0 | #9 |
9. Canterbury | 0-1 | #7 |
10. Bloomfield | 2-0 | #10 |
Not much worth changing here in Class 1A as Canterbury and Fountain Central were the only teams that lost from the preseason Top 10. Evansville Christian, who certainly was considered alongside Lutheran for the top spot, picked up a very impressive win over Class 4A Terre Haute North. Bloomfield breaks into the Top 10 with a 2-0 start to their season.
Class 2A – Top 10
Team | Record | Previous Ranking |
1. Brownstown Central | 1-0 | #1 |
2. Tipton | 1-0 | #2 |
3. Blackhawk Christian | 0-0 | #4 |
4. Wapahani | 2-0 | #5 |
5. Providence | 0-1 | #3 |
6. Bishop Luers | 0-0 | #7 |
7. Park Tudor | 0-1 | #6 |
8. Adams Central | 0-0 | #10 |
9. Southwestern (Hanover) | 1-0 | NR |
10. Paoli | 0-0 | NR |
Brownstown Central and Providence faced-off to begin their respective seasons as the Braves defeated the Pioneers 68-55. The only reason Providence moves down here is that it was so tight in that 2-5 space to begin with. Similarly, Park Tudor drops just one spot after a respectable showing against Class 3A #2 Guerin Catholic. However, Wabash and Parke Heritage each fall out of the polls with early season losses. Welcome in Southwestern (Hanover) and Paoli.
Class 3A – Top 10
Team | Record | Previous Ranking |
1. Scottsburg | 1-0 | #1 |
2. Guerin Catholic | 2-0 | #2 |
3. Delta | 1-0 | #3 |
4. Evansville Memorial | 0-0 | #4 |
5. Brebeuf Jesuit | 2-0 | #5 |
6. Evansville Bosse | 0-0 | #6 |
7. South Bend St. Joseph | 0-0 | #7 |
8. Heritage Hills | 1-0 | #8 |
9. Danville | 0-0 | #9 |
10. NorthWood | 0-0 | #10 |
No movement at all here as all preseason Top 10 teams either won or didn’t play. Brebeuf Jesuit admittedly feels underrated a bit at #5, especially after their 2-0 start which included a 20+ point beatdown of Hamilton Southeastern. However, the top of Class 3A is so good it is hard to justify moving them up this early in the season. It will shake itself out if it is meant to be.
Class 4A – Top 10
Team | Record | Previous Ranking |
1. Lawrence North | 1-0 | #1 |
2. Fort Wayne Wayne | 0-0 | #4 |
3. Westfield | 1-0 | #6 |
4. Kokomo | 1-1 | #2 |
5. Noblesville | 2-0 | #5 |
6. Fishers | 2-0 | #9 |
7. Crispus Attucks | 0-0 | #7 |
8. Center Grove | 2-0 | #8 |
9. Ben Davis | 0-1 | #3 |
10. Plainfield | 2-0 | #10 |
Some early season shakeup here as Fishers dominated Ben Davis and Westfield defeated Kokomo in matchups between preseason Top 10 teams. The Shamrocks obviously jump Kokomo, but not by much as the game was very close. However, Fishers does vault up the rankings while the Giants tumble down as that was a much more convincing victory (though Ben Davis was without a key starter due to football). Moving Fort Wayne Wayne up to #2 without playing admittedly doesn’t feel right, but that is why early season polls are such an inexact science. We thought the Generals were a Top 5 team in the preseason so they shouldn’t be punished and jumped over simply because they didn’t play yet.
